The 10 Best Game Engines of This Generation

@Blufox

id's Q3A engine is obsolete and not considered part of the current generation of engines. Valves Source engine is almost 4 years old. Valve does attempt to update it from time to time but it has fallen behind the other prominent game engines....

@suryansh

Youre welcome...

you've gotta be kidding me. the absolutely horrific gta 4 engine and the strictly average cod 4 engine make the cut but source doesn't? valve have updated everything except the lighting model in source. it's just that they haven't changed the name, that's why everyone thinks it's obsolete. all engines are built upon their older versions. cryengine 2 is built on top of the the far cry engine, unreal 3 is built on top of unreal 2.5, the call of duty games haven't had a new engine since call of duty 2. heck, gta4 and unreal engine 3 can't even support anti aliasing without it being forced with ridiculous supersampling.

GTA4 engine is the most pathetic engine !!

I agree Source engine is one of the best engines ever, when it was released it was able to run on obsolete systems at decent graphics. I believe scalability should be given a lot more weight-age then eye candy alone.

Q3A was a deal breaker back then, and I think its yet used to test the prowess as a CPU benching tool.

+1 for this

^ crytek have different prices for their engine depending on whether they take a percentage of the profits, whether they allow the sandbox 2 editor to be distributed along with the licensed game or in the case that there is no profit sharing.

Forget Q3 engine... but what about Doom3 engine, which powers Quake4, Quake4 Wars etc? IIRC, Quake 4 Wars is still considered as one of the good OGL benchmark for graphic card. Though OGL hardly matters these days, it's still a good engine.

Source was launched a long time ago, but the updates that Valve keep bringing to it are not insignificant. Just look at HL2, Episode One and Episode Two... each of these three show significant improvement compared to previous one. Plus, I agree UT3 engine has major issues with FSAA... in comparison, Source efficiency and performance is truly commendable.

This list, at least for me, does not feel like good list.

The best looking source "game" i have played is FakeFactorys Half Life mod. Yes its a mod and not a "game" per se, but this is by far the "best looking" implementation of source I have seen so far.

Because this is an ambitious mod to say the least, you need a really good pc to do it justice. Then again, the same can also be said for Crysis for that matter.

Having said that, its interesting to note what the author of the mod wrote in the readme file for the mod itself. Heres a snip:-

"PERFORMANCE-WARNING:

The Orangebox/Source Engine is getting outdated and performs poor compared to newer engines like the Cry-Engine or the Unreal-Engine.
It's almost impossible to get good framerates with enhanced viewrange, hires-textures and high polycount. Therefore prepare yourself for fps below 40 in some open areas, unless you're using the latest NASA supercomputer.

Currently i have reached the source-engine limits in almost all areas. Unfortunately the limits are quite low. The current build of the source engine can't render detailed open areas or nice foliage without hitting this limits. (Compared to the Cry-Engine: Source engines 100 % entity limit equals approx. 5 % of the Cry-Engine limit)

I'll take a break now, hoping the next engine version will give the possibilities, i need."

Having said that, the results are nothing short of stunning. Heres an ingame screenshot from the mod.

If you're interested, then have a look at this link which shows a -direct comparison- between screenies from the hl2 default game and the FakeFactory mod version.

Half-Life 2 vs. Cinematic Mod 10: Visual comparison - Update: New darker look - Cinematic Mod 10, Half Life 2, Fakefactory, comparison - PC Games Hardware

The "mod" in question is over 10GB in size, which is large and rivals many commercial stand alone games. It also requires hl2, ep1 and ep2 to be pre-installed and "run" at least once before you can play this mod.

IMO, this mod highlights the current limit of the "source" engine as it stands today.

Is the mod worth the download? IMO, if you have a good PC and like HL2, I certainly think it is. Decide for yourself....

i'm waiting for fakefactory 10 final to download it. the guy who makes this mod is extremely talented, no doubt, but he makes some decisions which directly interfere in the feel of the gameplay, which bugs me. his models are terrible and i believe he replaces the music of the game too in some parts. if he could stick to his new textures and nothing else, i believe the mod would be much better off.

btw ricky it's nice to see you're out of hibernation ;). what are you playing these days?

Although source and Dunia deserve a spot on the list, Avalanche itself is not undeserving either. Just Cause had pretty good graphics for a open world game and it was for too resource hungry either. and I am eagerly waiting for Just Cause 2.

Anyways, I think UT3 Engine is scalable engine of the lot. You can make a game look as good or as bad as you want, is not very resource hungry and not limited to FPS games. There are a number of FPS, TPS, RPG games in the market based on this engine and I recently got MK vs DC and surprised to find that this one on one fighter uses the UT3 Engine too.

Capcom also deserves commendation for its game engines though they seem to be all tailored for specific games. Great graphics, and not very resource hungry even with 8X AA and 16X AF.
