Hiya there!

i finally decided to get myself a guitar (well, another friend's getting one too) :ohyeah:

[@Shrey: No, i'm not gonna become a rocker though :P ]

There was a nice thread here about guitars but guess its gone with the old Chatterbits section. :(

So...

almost everyone is recommending an acoustic for a beginner like me..

Need recommendations for models and good place to buy in Chennai. :)

Thank you!!

BTW i'd like to thank Rio for his excellent site ::::www.axemanrio.com:::: :)

Good thing you're in Chennai - many guitar stores to choose from - Musee Musicals, Shruti, Promusic, Tulsi, John's Musicals and many more :)

Pick your guitar based on the music you're going to play... if it's rock, get a standard electric guitar and a 30-50W Stranger amp (in fact I have one lying around :P). That will set you back by around 8 - 10k.

If you don't know what style you'd eventually pick up and just want to get started learning the basics, get an acoustic guitar. Again, budget counts. For 5-6k you can get an imported acoustic from Promusic on Casa Major Road, Egmore. If that's what you want, I can call the owner and find out what he's got so you can walk in and pick it up.

On the other hand, if you want to start basic... you'll need about 2.5 - 3k to get yourself a Givson or Ebanez. I'd recommend the semi-acoustic range as it has good sound, will last you a while and you can mod it into an acoustic-electric later. For this I'd recommend going to Musee Musicals on Mount Road or Shruti Musicals in Kilpauk (next to Fruit Shop and below Centurion bank). Go with someone who knows about guitars so they can help you select a good piece - truth is not all guitars on the shelves are good. In my experience 1 in 2 guitars have some issue, primarily fret-buzz. Unfortunately, there's no other way to prepare you for buying a guitar, so I hope you do know some guitarist who can go with you :P But if you're ever coming to Bangalore in the near future, let me know, I can get a guitar custom-made for you and you can take it back.

And once you get your guitar, find a teacher... even the best handbooks can't replace a teacher.

P.S. My site hasn't been updated since 2001, but I plan to publish new material in a couple months :D

Try This Site based in mumbai. btw, if your going acoustic, see if you get a Granada. Stay away from a Givson, if possible. best bet is to go to a shop and play as many guitars that you can and pick the one YOU think sounds good.
If you still cant play, take a friend who can play along with ya. trust me, its much better than buying a guitar and then realising in a couple of weeks thats it a piece of crap.

if your going electric (something i do not recommend for any beginner) best bet is to buy a Squier Stratocaster (it comes with a beginners pack, packed with a 10watt fender/squier amp)

and if your ever gonna play an electric regularly, or live for that matter PLEASE get an amp which is more than 30Watts (those Marshall MG10s and MG15's just don't cut it)

Oh yeah, I know about Furtados - a friend used to work there. But even after 10 years, the situation in India hasn't changed. I haven't bought a single piece of hardware in India since 2000 so I'm checking prices after that long and the scene is unchanged :P Too bad.

LUCKILY, now the gear has started to come here. Line6, VOX and PRS have officially entered India. (Which means i get my VOX amp next month wheee!)

although prices are a bit inflated, the import duties are impossibly high still.
even i had a tough time finding myself a leftie guitar (got stuck with a crappy ibanez RG when i wanted a Mexi Strat)

but yeah, now that we have more options to buy gear here, hopefully the prices will drop slowly.

i already have a Granada Guitar. I am missing a tutor... any good tutor in south mumbai ? i want to learn guitar since long........ PM me if anyone has this useful information. thanks

if youre looking for seconds ,you have to be lucky to find them on freeads . luckily i got my first guitar from there for 500 . too bad the owner dint know that it was an imported epiphone worth 10k :D .

for new ones ,check out Tulsi near egmore . they're famous for custom-made guitars ... damn good and been there for a vvery long time. got lot of pics of artists with them on thier single two room shop . they make everything from electric guitars to 6 string bassies to mandolins .

Me a self -taught guitarists myself ,and have two acoustic guitars now. i got mine from there -custom made fiber based acoustic for 3.8 k . sexy deep sound. for starting off these are better than any of those you find in shops and are cheaper !

Thank you VERY VERY much for the info Rio, Powersurge and Bosky!!!

{thanks for the offer Rio :) }

And what is this i see about custom-made guitars (a la Tulsi).. i don't need a custom-one .. do i? :s

finally gettin a guitar?? ...:D good work. :P. Lakshman Shruthi is good.. u cant try ur luk there.. ne ways.. wat do u hv in ur mind now?

Thanks for the linky Harsh!! :)

@Shrey: you of all people need to get one dude :)

@scarsinme: hm.. will chk that place out :)

@kin_of_evil: yeah.. thats why i was asking you about it earlier ;) anyway, right now looking a a givson i guess :| and trying to find someone good with guitars who'll be free to go along with to select a good/decent guitar..

a friends friend says a Pluto is good.. says its around 3K at Shruthi Musicals.. according to him
"it doesnt jare up like a givson jumbo n the tone is awesome."
any ideas on this "Pluto" anyone? :S

scarsinme said:
yes i got one for about 2.5 from Lakshman Shruti.
But as bosky said, go for 2nd hand stuff

holy crap no, only go for second hand stuff IF the condition is good, there is no fret buzz AT ALL, and tell the guitar shop owner to check if the neck is proper (not warped)

btw pluto's have decent tone, but i still say take a look at the granadas (2.5k) all the ones ive played had SWEET tone, almost comparable to the Yamaha acoustic's (which are in the 7k range)

if ur in chennai and want a guitar ... go to tulsi . either get one ordered just for u (3,900 odd ) or u can even by the ones theyve made already . check these out ,get one asap and start playing ! 8 )

..hmmm nice thread...i ve always wanted to learn to a play da guitar...but couldn't do it cauz of studies..etc etc...but now once my 12th gets over in a year have planned to get a simple acoustic guitar..and learn it..

IMO there's no age to learn da instrument so it must ok nah to learn it after my 12th..?? and yeah on an average how much time does it take to learn it from a good teacher\frnd. ? say about 2 yrs is enough to learn it completely..and play some good music...

also which guitar does the JAL band use ? means is it the acoustic or electric..i think both r used isn't it ? cauz i love da sound of the guitar music in the Aadat , woh lamhe and other instrumental songs of JAL....
