The ISP Thread

Hey guys,

We have all been at the recieving end of the cruft the ISPs prefer to throw at us. For example:

  • Unlimited ! (but with a silent 64 kpbs upload cap)
  • Day unlimited ! (but with 150 MB day limit)
  • Sourcing bandwidth from SG/USA and forgetting the necessity to tie up with Indian networks (BAD to WORST lag in Indian sites + VOIP.)

No ISP will ever come clean and admit why they adopt practises and there fore it is very required that the "customer beware." (wow, that rhymed :))

So i request you all to post the following information so that new Netizens dont fall into the mud hole and be left with a bitter experience and hate for Indian broadband.

Post your information in the following format (HOWTOs of how to find the information follows) :

Code:
[noparse]

[COLOR="Red"][U]Time of testing[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]ISP[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Location[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Promised speed[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Achieved speed[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Ping to Singapore[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Ping to USA[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Ping within India[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Ping to local gateway[/U][/COLOR]:

[COLOR="Red"][U]Remarks[/U][/COLOR]:

[/noparse]

Just copy paste the previous ^^ section into your reply and fill in the required information.

Use "??" to mark unavailable/unapplicable information. Also, for Promised speed, post both the promised download and upload speeds (ex: 256K / 256K, or 256K / ?? i.e. download is promised as 256K, but nothing is mentioned about upload.)

HOWTOS

How to find the Time of testing:

woot :D

How to find location?

Just ask your parents/friends :P

How to find promised speed?

Refer to ISP brochure or recall ur contract :D

How to find achieved speed?

broadband » Speed tests

Just select the test which seems least unused. It will give most accurate results. However if you are feeling lazy, then use this, or this :P

How to find ping to singapore?

Click Start > Run. Then type "ping -t 203.81.39.52" and then click OK.

A window should open up displaying line after line of ping values. Post a average number from the display.

Like so:

How to find ping to USA?

Repeat the above procedure but replace the IP address (i.e. 203.81.39.52) with this "66.102.9.99" The value should now reflect your RTT (Return Trip Time) or Latency to USA (Google server taken as example.)

How to find ping within India?

It is very important that your ISP is well networked for communication within India. [noparse]www.yahoo.co.in[/noparse] is a very well connected website. So we get a representative figure by pinging it.

Just repeat the above procedure but do a "ping -t www.yahoo.co.in" now. Post the average value.

How to find ping to the local gateway?

Many problems culminate from having a poor connection to your ISP server itself. So lets ascertain that it is problemless.

First find your local gateway address. Then ping to it to find the ping (should be low for optimal performance.) Like so:

In the above image.... First I brought up a command promt window by doing Start > Run > cmd

Then I invoked "ipconfig" which gives me my IP configuration. As you can see, I pinged my gateway (my VPN gateway.) and got 0ms - 1ms pings :P Good enough (actually I am just pinging the VPN client which is then packaging my packets and shuffling them off to the VPN gateway.) But I hope you got the method. Just ignore the specifics.

Conclusion

Well I have tried to make it as detailed as possible. Please make this little effort and post the required information as this will allow users to make a informed choice as well as (in future) force ISPs to take corrective steps because after all, we are THEIR customers. If we consider this thread criticial, they will too.

Yes, I did think of making this a guide (considering my talents and affinity to post guides :P) but I preferred not to. As this is the logical location for such kind of thread.

Karan

Time of testing: 4:58 PM IST

ISP: Deutche Bank VPN

Location: Bangalore

Promised speed: ?? / ??

Achieved speed: www.dslreports.com/1156764570]broadband » Speed Interpretation[/url]

Ping to Singapore: ??

Ping to USA: ??

Ping within India: ??

Ping to local gateway: 1ms

Remarks: This is a VPN connection. Hence due to security reasons, I cannot ping to the "Internet" and have to access sites through a proxy. However, this is Ok for office use :P

Nice idea Karan,

1 small suggestion though....
Just select the test which seems least unused. It will give most accurate results. However if you are feeling lazy, then use this, or this

I'd suggest using a local server for the speed test as it is always advisable to use a geographically close server for testing speeds...

perhaps this:

Bharti Infotel - Bandwidth Meter

Or this one as listed on DSL reports (Calcutta based server) though I do not know how accurate it is:

DATAONE BROADBAND - Bandwidth Meter

Anyway, i'll post back my ISPs results tonight from home

hey nice suggestion. I had thought of the same, but what I wanna test is "International Connectivity." Many ISPs using these conniving tricks into making the user believe that they are getting HIGH bandwidth whereas the actual connection gets chocked from the International gateway. When the sites which are located GEOGRAPHICALLY in India supersedes the number of sites (which we frequent, including TE) being hosted in US/etc then it will make sense to use the local bandwidth test sites. Till then it is best to stick to the DSLREPORT speed test as it gives a indicator of the International connectivity of the user.

I hope I made my point clear for you.

Karan

This is exactly what I wanted to come up. When you test on their own speed test servers (conviniently placed before their International gateways which get chocked because they dont have enough b/w) you get full promised speeds. But as soon as you step out, the "DHAMAKA" comes. What can you say. ~ 200 kbps on a 512 kbit line is pathetic to say the least. Now I am gonna log off the VPN and will post some new results.

Regards,

Karan

edit: just noticed.... what pathetic pings to yahoo.co.in. just speaks of the POOR routing they have going on in there.

Actually I do get 30+ KBps on 256kbps and 55+ KBps at nights in torrent dwonloads..Anyway, actual stats later today!

They generate a result image with all the required info and everybody can just image-link that.

Below are my results with DataOne 256k,

As you can see, it includes the download speed, upload speed, time of testing (+5:30 for India), location, distance and ping. Quite handy.
