I needed some help guys ...... i know searching on net helps but on hands on experience is better :) ....

first of all wat is the best way to take pics in the nyt with flash ..... say on completely dark environment or in white light ie tube light ..... ?? when i take pics flash is always over powering :(

also how to take maximum out of ISO feature of camera ??

also wat does Tv and Av feature do ??

also how to focus the camera on the main subject correctly like all other things are blur ??

i think thats it for now :D

PS: please don't laugh at the some n00b questions

firstly... Photographs in complete dark will mostly come inaccurate... Avoid shotting in complete darkness...

Secondly... if there is dim/low light then turn on the night mode of the camera and try shotting with that with flash off...

I guess TV/AV feature lets you directly view the pics/videos on the TV...

lastly read about macro modes... When shooting too near use macro mode...

Also i guess you haven't gone through your camera manual yet... Go through it.... Throughly... You will get most of your answers there ;)

P.S. Try buying a tripod... though your camera has a image stablizer but a 1000 rupee tripod will never hurt you...

First of all, what camera do you have ? And is it an external flash.

You can stick a peice of A4 paper in front of the flash for it to act as a diffuser. This works incredibly well.

If it is an external flash, you could bounce it of the roof/walls etc. if indoors.

ISO is basically the sensitivity to light. So in low light you should use something like ISO 800 and something ISO 100 during daytime. Note that higher ISO values will lead to noisier images....but ISO 400-800 is usable in most good cameras.

TV is for Shutter Priority Mode and AV for Aperture Priority (atleast in Canon camera's it is :P). TV will allow you to set the Shutter speed, the camera sets the aperture automatically, vice versa for AV.

Depending on your camera make/model this may/maynot be possible. Ideally you use a lens with a wide aperture and stand relatively close to the subject. There is a lot more there is to it, but thats the basic of bokeh (thats show-off speak for background blur :P)

Everyone starts somewhere... I recommend you take a good long read of the manual. A digicam is not a PC, and you do need to read the manual to understand how things work.

whenever you want to take photos in total night the flash will always create a halo with stronger lights in centre and fading in outer rims. to avoid this

if you are shooting a subject try lighting with reflection as mentioned by wolff, or try light diffusers.

if you are shooting a scene if it does have light emitting try with flash off as it will help you catch more depth and details.

if you are shooting an obect then you can try different lights with diffferent sources.

to take max advantage of ISO you need to take same shot with different ISO settings with rest settings same. the more ISO settings the more details it enters the photo but simultaneously it also induces more noise.

Tv (Time Value) shutter priority : it means the different setting will adjust according to shutter speed you set. like if you set 1 sec then aperture will open little less as long exposure will let light come in. while if you set shutter speed as 1/2000 sec the aperture will open more to let more light pass in.

Same way Av (aperture value) comes into effect, if you keep aperture value low means opening the aperture more than rest setting will adjust themselves.

How to focus : which camera do you have? what type of focus mechanism it does have? wht pointer it show on viewfinder to focus(i mean there are multiple rectangles or a square with four angles or a round with a rectangle, a full rectangle)

usually in point and shoot cameras in auto or other preset modes the DOF remains infinity meaning all the objects in field will be in focus.

then there is multi point focus points which shows on viewfinder and those areas will be in sharp focus.

while in SLRs you have advantage of controlling your DOF while putting the subject in question with sharp focus.

so little more details from you side like :
which camera
and a scanned image of you user maual of focus (both auto and manual which must be showing an image with areas in focus) page will help a lot to help you better.

Thanks medpal ..... i have a Canon S3 IS camera ...... i will try and upload the manual .......

Here we see the same photograph taken with exposures about three and a half stops apart. Both were at an aperture of f/9. The one on the left was shot at 1/2000 sec and the one on the right at 1/200 sec

Understanding Histograms

can someone explain what are stops? how can we change it? in the above example, was it changed just by changing shutter speed?

as the shots are edited for web we cant get any info on it.

but he has shot these photos on Av mode (first is small aperture so the shutter speed is fast and second shot is taken at 3.5 stops above the previous means the aperture is larger so the shutter speed is slow)

basically he changed the f stop or aperture value.

this is what i infered from it, hope i am right.

You guys should also check out Canon's own tutorial...

= Enjoy! Digital SLR camera =

It's primarily aimed at DSLR users, but with a Good camera (like your S3) that manually lets you control Shutter/Aperture, most of the stuff applies.

this is one awesome guide ....... i will recommend this to everyone :D

Yes you are.

Basically, changing the aperture value is altering the amount of light that enters the sensor.

Increasing the Aperture Value = Stopping Down (and vice versa).

Point and Shoot Digicams would at the most go down to f/5.6, while most SLR's manage about f/32 depending on the lens.

What it means ?

Well, when you stop down the lens, you "increase" depth of field, but have to lower shutters (since more light is need), hope you figured it, will give a more detailed explanation if you need it ;)

guys another problem i am facing it of focus ...... yesterday nyt i was clicking some snaps at home and i was not able to focus on the subjects properly ...... pictures were not as sharp as i wanted them to be ..... i trued all the modes like automatic/Tv/Av/manual no use :( .......

and wat is the best resolution to take pics currently i am using large size(6.1MP) with super fine settings ....... can a slow SD card could be the problem ...... i am using a 2GB toshiba class 4 SD card, couldn't find the high speed SD card here so for the time being bought this one, altho the high speed was written on the packaging but nowhere speed was mentioned ......

^ Auto, Tv, Av, are all exposure modes, they have nothing to do with focus.

Set the cam to autofocus, you seem to have selected a manual focus distance like 3.0m or 5.0m

^^ Also, another issue is of the distance. If you are on AutoFocus mode and the distance between the cam and the subject is not enough, the autofocus will fail you.

Autofocus basically looks at contrast in a scene to determine what to focus on.

One other trick I use on my S2 (and hence MAY work with S3 too) is to hold the camera vertically if autofocus is not working as expected. Once you hold the cam vertically and achieve focus you can lock it and then recompose horizontally without changing the distance....try it ..you'll be pleasantly surprised

Most probably you accidentally set the camera to manual focus mode...As I said earlier read the manual :P. There should be a reset settings option in there somewhere....

Unlikely but still possible... if the lens is not clean.. the pics wont appear sharp at all...

Unless you are running low on space... you should always take pics at the highest possible quality. Slow SD card is not related to PQ in any way... the only difference that a slow SD card will make is that you will be able to shoot lesser amount of photos in "continous shooting" mode as camera will be slower to put data onto the card...

guys its not on manual focus mode coz i tried both manual and auto yesterday ....... but without the dial manual focus sucks :( ......

PS: i will try to post the pics when i get back home .......
