Bah, tried compiling some software on Visual Studio 2010 beta1 on HDD and SDD and it took almost same time on both for compiling as well as converting the project file formats 
Must be more CPU bound than IO bound I guess...
I still can't get good numbers for install time and boot up time of Kubuntu since I've got an early 10.04 alpha with problems (barely managed to get it installed) will wait to try that...
Maybe I should try some timepass useless zipping/unzipping of random files on my disks to pass some more time...
