Things not looking good for Longhorn

Some quotes from latest review of Longhorn Build 5048 by Paul Thurrott:

The 4000-series builds that Microsoft had just shown off and handed out had already run their course and were destined for the technological dustbin. The 4000-series builds were scrapped, and the company started building Longhorn again from scratch, using the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
On the one hand, we have Windows XP with SP2, which many people describe as "good enough," a phrase that will haunt Microsoft for years to come as it tries to foist new Windows and Microsoft Office versions on them with decreasing success. On the other hand, I present the competition, Linux and Mac OS X. The Linux market may be convoluted and disjointed, but Linux, too, is "good enough," and it's free, along with "good enough" applications like OpenOffice.org and better Web browsers, like Firefox. It gets worse. Apple's Mac OS X, recently upgrade to version 10.4 is more than "good enough."
Not surprisingly, Longhorn build 5048 is visually a mix of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, tossed together with a new Aero theme that is rendered, in this build, using XP-era technology and not the advanced Avalon-based UI we'll see in later builds.
Longhorn build 5048 is hugely disappointing from an end user perspective because it shows how far behind Microsoft is in delivering the next client version of Windows. Also, expectations were high that Microsoft would hit a home run with this build, because it was the first public Longhorn release in a year. With my enthusiasm firmly in check now, I can look forward to some June briefings and the expected July release of Longhorn Beta 1. I do expect that things will indeed improve over time. However, that's not saying much, as things can only improve.

I don't know what more to think about, what is wrong with these guys? this is a joke....

Boy oh boy & we think that we have seen the worse form M$,i wont be surprised tomorrow to get a phone call from my retailer asking me back for my win xp pro cuz M$ needs to build their uber software thats missing everything & that will be released by the time dinosaurs will come back to earth...
Great find Quick! check your cp ;)

Lol AP....

But still...Isnt Longhorn slated for 2006 ....thr's still much time......hope they do smethng about this...Hope they do....cuz i dnt think i hav any othr OS to use.... :ashamed:

sux..bigtime

I don't know about 2006 mate, this is just unbelievable ,I don't wanna imagine how much money they blew on this already & what they gonna? go rebuild again? omg just some dayz ago Mr.gates was speaking about his super uber longhorn features...they need to get their act together, this is not an act from the worlds largest & most richest software maker.

Well i dont knw....but i dnt think thts gonna happens soon....until ofcourse they get sme serious competition.....nd who knws if longhorn mite not even release in late 2006.... :@

Yup but the features they tak bout lkonghorn r breath taking....i mean to install the OS frm now on 1 has to upgrade their Whole PC  :@ to take notice of the features......damn on spot to make more money ;)

EDIT: BTW Longhorns gonna cme in 4 versions ;)

wat features? from wat i hear...nothing new is left with longhorn now...
microsoft were simply unable to implement the ultra cool features they were talking (rather, dreaming) about. they're dropping one feature or the other each day :P
well...now it seems longhorn wont be anything more than a polished xp or 2003 with modified themes. ;)

Well, I don't think I will ever be using Longhorn at this rate.
MS seems to be having trouble figuring out what exactly to do to sell LH. Right now, computer development as a whole has slowed down, with people trying to do more with less. So MS is stuck with the unenviable job of creating a lean mean OS which supports all those fancy features they were talking about.
Of course, they could just make a huge piece of bloatware, but I don't think many people will upgrade just for them - not this time around.
I wish the hurd project would pick up a bit. Then we could be rid of huge OSes.

Those posts were posted after MS began asking websites to put off Longhorn screenshots .. Paul Thurott's site was one of them .. I read a nice angry post by him which I think later he edited ...

Maybe, you are true, batty!
But, still, one may not be wronged to say that MS is going down!
See, they came up with the bright idea of establishing a Linux lab, then yesterday I posted a news article on MS trying to capture the desktop search market with their "longhorn".
Then, there are news floating around the net that MS is dropping feature after feature of their new upcoming OS.
Then, this!

Maybe MS needs to change ways! Maybe they might consider the idea of building their own linux distro named "Microsoft LinHorn", though its highly unlikely! :P

Dude, M$ is far from going down they have the money, and money is power, unless Apple releases its OS for PC version. MAC is a non contender Period, their hardware sucks. Linux even now is just too complicated for most of the folks, and I dont see the "public" making a switch anytime soon.

However bad their product is there is no similar alternative, so Windows is here to stay for atleast a couple of years more.

I think microsoft is now really pushing there limits. after windows xp they should have concentrated more on improving there present products rather than investing in new stuff.

Well M$ right now is currently messed with Xbox 2, leaks, advertisement and marketing. IMO, this has got to be the WORST phase in M$ history.
First they got Firefox, challenging Internet Explorer and doing well.
Then Google, they've take on tuff competition with Microsoft
Apple, another enemy of M$, maybe they've realised the right time to attack M$ is now, strike 'em in the back!
Sony, if they don't plan their Xbox 2 carefully, it will be very easy for Sony to remain on no.1 even if Ps3 is a lower compared to mighty Xbox 2.

Hahaha, writing this makes me happy :ohyeah:

hehe...i see few of us discussing if m$ goin down or not...:P
its not the topic here actually...m$ will rule for few more years if not forever ;)

wat i'm trying to find out - is m$ longhorn worth the time and effort?
most of the cool features have been dropped already. wat will longhorn be like
without those dream features...yet again m$ stops way short of developing
a revolutionary OS...

In simple words, if MS is going around dropping those dream features, then Longhown would be no better than a polished/rehashed Win XP.
Hence, my conclusion would be that Longhorn will not be worth the time & effort if they aren't able to pull off something revolutionary with it! :P

i was personally shocked to see their latest build. I installed it on my backup machine and i did not expect what i saw. A completely different longhorn.
I dont know but microsoft really needs to sit down and design a completely new OS from the scratch. Nothing much has changed in past 5 years or may i say lasy 10 years.
2006 is not that far away when you talk about big projects like Longhorn. They wont make it if they do what they are doing now.

You did miss this:
The 4000-series builds were scrapped, and the company started building Longhorn again from scratch, using the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
So, the latest build (5xxx) is actually made from scratch. U expect them to do that all over again?? ;) forget it mate else we wont be able to see longhorn even in 2010...:P

Nothing really new came from MS since Windows 95, ok windows 2000 brought the NT series to home users, but even then, nothin new ...

So in the end maybe those users who don't care much for new and powerful features will stick with whatever they use, and the adventurous will venture away from the windows world. Hopefully so, anyway.

But MS is not one to just stand around, they may see to it that new applications don't run on anything older than longhorn, and users will have to upgrade.

Actiually its contradictory statement. Froma scratch means totally from scratch and not based on win2003 SP1 which itself id based on WIndows XP/2k.....

I mean yes i do expect them to rewrite the code from scratch. getting tired of same old things here. And its not that they did not had time. Longhorn is in devlopement for almost 2 years now.
