PC Peripherals Thinking about a RAM upgrade

I currently have 2 GB of RAM [Two 1 GB sticks of Transcend DDR2 800] installed on my Gigabyte MA78GM and AMD 9650 system.

These 2 Gigs fall woefully short while working with large scans, so I am thinking of increasing it. I have two RAM slots free. My budget for the upgrade is roughly 2K.
My main dilemma is that I have Fedora [64bit] and XP Pro [32 bit] installed. While fedora will support virtually infinite amounts of RAM, XP will cap it at 4 Gigs.

Should I:
(a) Get two more 1 GB modules and stay within my budget.
(b) Go overbudget, get two more 2 GB modules bringing my system to 6 GBs.

My question is, will 4 Gigs fall short if I upgrade to Win7 in the future? What are the RAM prices like in Mumbai currently?

since your budget is 2k buy 2 1gb sticks imo 4gb should be ok for normal use will work fine with windows 7

get two more 1GB RAM. Try to get the same model you have. No, Windows 7 doesn't require fancy machines. Even with 2GB, you are good to go with Win 7. But you can't utilize more than 3GB RAM unless install 64bit OS be it XP or Vista or Win 7.

one more thing, i think the ram prices are at its peak. 1gb 800mhz use to cost arnd 1.1k and now its 1.4k, prices shud cum down, but dont know whn!

also consider OCZ Titanium 2gb 800mhz c4 latency @ Rs. 1650

EDIT: sorry typo thr: its 2gb 800mhz (transcend) - was 1.1k and now 1.4k

and CMSX2 was Rs. 1300-1350 and now Rs. 1650-1700

I have to agree... the RAM prices are really high off-late. Yesterday the price of Corsair XMS 2 (2GB stick @ 800MHz) was 1.9k in Kolkata. :S

Do you guys suggest I should wait for RAM prices to fall? A week perhaps?

NOTE: Guys and Girls, I am NOT upgrading for Win7. I need to work with 1200 dpi A4 scans, hence the upgrade.

Instead of ram change the CPU, sell off that power hogger and get the Athlon II for 5.5k AMD processors
I don't need much CPU power. My CPU barely peaks at 25% most of the time......
Its memory that I run out of.

Then grab a 2GB/4GB stick as per your requirements ASAP . I don't think RAM prices will come down again.

Going back to ur original ques, I wud suggest to get 2gb stick and add another 2gb afterwards only if needed.

Transcend 2 GB 800mhz - 1.4k (i think 3 yrs warranty)
Kingston 2 GB 800mhz - shud b lil chepaer thn trans 1.2k-1.3k (guesswork) (3 yrs warranty?)

OCZ 2GB 800mhz Titanium C4 - Rs. 1600-Rs. 1650 (3yrs warranty)

Corsair CMSX2 2gb 800mhz - Rs. 1650-Rs. 1700 (10yrs warranty)

OCZ and Corsair r recommended.

It will run at default C5 latency @1.8V. Also if you increase the DDR voltage from BIOS manually, you can set the C4 latency. :)
