Confused…which one is the original Kingston product? There is no difference from their packaging.
Let's begin and see which one is the original Kingston product and which one is fake.

@ kingston FE

so are you gonna provide a original pen drive for free so that we can compare it with our next purchase :P

but seriously the differentiating factors are not clear if we are seeing just a single product :S

The differences are far too subtle to detect and make decision while buying

the data in the guide is good for only detecting a fake after we've bought the piece

one cannot be expected to lug a laptop around to buy a Pen Drive

Yikes ! This is pretty bad that fakes are so similar to the originals. Kingston should really change the packaging ASAP or provide some foolproof holograms else it makes little sense to take a risk when fakes look so similar.

Dear All,

Thanks for your great opinions. To prevent our customers from counterfeit products, Kingston keeps providing new generation products and new package to fight. For example, The USB drive in the photo is DT100 and new DT100G2 has been launched to replace it. Since the appearance is easy to be immitated, the best way to prevent fake products is still to purchase all Kingston products from our official distributors, retailers or resellers. Thanks again for your great support!

Cheers,
Kingston Technology

All that could be copied. Kingston should move to holograms as security method to check counterfeit products... Most buyers are naive & they wouldn't spend time searching for an authorized dealer/ distributor...

This is why I stopped using & recommending Kingston to anybody 'coz it was really hard to know if it was indeed fake or real product...

OK, So is this what you want me to do??

1) Buy a pendrive.

2) Perform the tests you have mentioned in the post.

3) Find out that the drive has no writing on the head, the slider color is blur and sliding out is not smooth, plastic is lighter and there is no thin plastic blister, the disk tilts downwards when plugged in, the drive is named as 'Removable Drive' and the transfer rate is slow at the beginning and then suddenly rises.

4) Realize that I have a fake pendrive. :@

5) Cry over my 'bad luck' and start over from Step 1 till I finally find a Genuine Kingston pendrive!!

Really?? Is that what you expect us to do?? :S

Buy it from a reputed dealer with proper VAT-paid bill and not some street vendor. That's the zeroth step you should be taking! :)

^^ kinda hard when Kingston refuses to give us a list of authorized dealers, only distributors. 'Reputed dealer' is kinda subjective. Given the fact that thumb drives tend to be low involvement purchases, nobody is gonna bother hunting around for a proper shop. My neighborhood provision store has some Kingston drives on display :P Should I assume then that they are fake?

Its rather shocking that for such a big market such as India, Kingston is not doing anything, and offloading its responsibility onto its channel and customers.

Pendrives are sold at tiny Stationary shops these days. Now, if you are telling me that I should go and do a background check on each vendor to see if he is reputed, you gotta be kidding me! :P

And in any case, when I buy a drive online, there is no way of ascertaining that the seller is reputed. When I do find out that the pendrive is a fake despite having a VAT paid bill from the dealer, I also realize that the seller is from Delhi and the purchase disputes are subject to Delhi jurisdiction. What do you expect me to do?? Go to Delhi and raise a dispute??

It should be Kingston's responsibility to make sure that the customers are able to verify the originality of the product before purchase... say just at a glance of some hologram.

And if I have to go through all this, I think the zeroth step should be to choose another brand. :(

They may be. Would you want to take a risk knowing Kingston fakes are available around, be my guest! :)

By reputed dealer, I meant something in the likes of Prime ABGB. They know for sure what and whom they are dealing with whereas your 'neighbourhood provision store' may not.

I wonder if Kingston would do it on behalf of the consumer, especially since a proper bill is given with the duplicate product. I am sure Kingston would be more keen on nailing such people and for company should be much easier than an individual.

making new versions is just a patch job. Just like others who have gone this path found out, the new fakes would come just as soon.

I would expect that they honour warranties of fake drives sold by retailers who are associated with their official distributors. Use the data from known fakes to crack down on fakes in the official channels ( like bosch did with the fake HID's in the indian market) or otherwise and like everyone has mentioned, add something like a hologram or an easy way to differentiate fakes from the originals

Can Kingston FE comment on this ?

I kinda doubt it.

Go to provision store
buy fake
do test
RMA
...
Get genuine kingston product in exchange for free
PROFIT!

:ohyeah:

Dear All,

We do appreciate all of your valuable opinions and suggestions. Since counterfeit issue has affected Kingston in India, we will try any possible way to protect our customers' rights. For foolproof hologram, it may not be workable on USB drive since it's kind of hard to customize the sticker to fit different drive's shape and actually it can not guarantee that counterfeiter won't duplicate the sticker.

To prevent from counterfeit products, we still strongly recommend all of our customers to contact with our official distributors to know where to buy and do not trust any unreasonable low price. If all of customers can buy from our authorized distributors, retailers and resellers, counterfeit products will disappear soon. If you buy fake products from our authorized shops, we will directly investigate it to protect your rights. Thanks again for your support!

Any question please feel free to let us know, thanks!

Regards,
Kingston Technology

I'll give you my observation in a few points:

1. They usually put a sticker on the storage capacity print.

2. Storage Capacities are usually over-bloated. Starting from 16GB to 64GB.

3. Prices vary accordingly.

4. Packaging is usually of inferior quality, using cheaper cardboard. But I've seen some with almost as good as original packaging.

5. Look for a sticker of an Indian Importer/Distributor.

Usually retailers in Lamington like Prime ABGB know of this issue and they can sort it out pretty easily, you can ask them directly if you want. They even recommended us to go for Kingston/Sandisk/Corsair because of their better warranty.
