Top 10 Antivirus Software

@guys,

i guess i am replying to someting like this in a long time......i dunno why ppl always ask which is the best AV? afterall, an anti-virus is the same for every brand u may look at having a bit modified scanning engine then the other making it the best around.

this question really stings, which is the best, i am freelancing for symantec & mcafee, but honestly i personally like both, but from a consumers point of view, i would say tough choice to make.

anyways, lets see, my rating or my choice of the best would be something like this:
1. panda internet security suite
2. symantec client security
3. kaspersky AV
4. bit defender av
5. nod32
6. mcafee
7. AVG free
8. avast free or pro
9. f-secure
10. norton av----the worse product i have tested.....hyeah:

nope..rite...both the reviews used here were miserable...

the reasons for nod32 loosing out ....
1. NO p2p scanning.... (now why would u need to scan files that are anyways getting downloaded to ur computer and will be eventually scanned be AMON... )

2. NO registry protection... why would u need that if the av in the 1st place doesnt allow the registry to get jacked by viruses spyware and malware crap..

3. NO webmail protection.... now who ever conducted these tests is a dumba** or really needs a lesson on wat webmail is... webmail works on http and it is checked by IMON ... so this is so not true...

4. NO online virus scanner... what difference would that make... u have viruses on ur system.. and then u have to go online to scan for them .. and not even clean them... y do u need an av on ur computer system payin $$$$.. ????

5. NO estimated scan time info.... now we all kno that nod32 is faster than most.. so y do we need to hurt the competition... and a scan thats fast and low on resources.. and very efficient... so why loose out on just a time display...

6. NO live chat and NO phone support and NO forums.. u call the av company and tel them that their prodct cant clean viruses??? wat for live chat.. .and support.. or is to get instructions on how to install.???nonsense...

7. NO windows 95 support... nod32 ...i just checked the site... the version for 98 is 95/98/me compatible... now the review says yes 98 but no 95...they even have a DOS version... and trust me thats the best way to get rid of viruses... most effective way.. no locked files no nothing... do the top3 have
bitdefender doesnt have it.. nope afiak none of the top 3 have it...
u dont use reviews to judge av performance... u use actual tests...
see some real tests.... they cover actual tests for antivirus sw ... and they are regularly updated...

I have just downloaded a trial of NOD 32 lets see how it works out on my system

Will also try KasperSky after using NOD 32 to see if it really is a resource hogger.

I loved some of the features of Kaspersky so wud like to try it out later.

EDIT:

Currently i am running a scan on my D Drive and there are huge no. of Trojan files on my PC which norton didnt detect at all.
[I was using a older version of Norton , 2004] :hellno:

I am feeling the difference now :hap2: hyeah:
NOD 32 Rocks but will still try KAV Later.

yes...IMO kaspersky is actually the best. Try packaging a known virus or supporting dll using UPC and then repacking using PECompact.

Most of the famous trojans are ignored by these top listed AV from your list... Only a few AVs like Kaspersky, NOD32 and Sophos could detect it!! I did this test with some 30 different AVs about 6 months back...

For me I love Kaspersky 6 now...and its not a resource hog by any means!!

File packer support is becoming more and more important in today's age. The AVs which have been known to have good support for packed executable files are as follows:

1) Kaspersky (The best)

2) BitDefender (Next best)

3) AntiVir (Pretty good)

4) Dr.Web/NOD32 (Slight edge to Dr.Web)

5) Norman (Very good for on-demand scan but not so good in real-time scan)

The others still need to somewhat improve on their packer support. However, this by itself does not indicate detection rate of any AV.

I tried BitDefender. Ridiculous resource hog! Copying files from DVD takes ages! Moving files takes eons! Installing software takes eternity!...well you get the idea

Not so much of a resource hog on my computer.....Well, after initial installation, BD grinds your hard disk like hell for enumerating file information to be used in the next rootkit scan (you cannot disable this hard disk grinding). It takes approximately an hour to finish on my computer, and after its done, it runs decently enough.

Those of you who want a very light AV with decent detection rates should look at Dr.Web, NOD32, Virus Chaser and AVG (free or paid versions).

3 of the best imo are Avast, NOD32 and Mcafee. When it comes to light free and simple AV nothing can tough Avast. Running my laptop which gets connected to god knows how many wifi spots, lan ports with 10 people accessing/adding data to it. And only thing that its defended by is Avast and sygate. thats it.

I just couldnt control myself and wanted to try out KAspersky since it has a better detection rate and has more deep scanning , also wanted to see for myself if it really is hogging a lot of sys resources.

What conclusion i have got.

1.> when the background scanner i.e. the one which runs continuously doesnt

consume much system resources its cpu utilization is similar to nods background scanner.

2.> when u start to scan ur hdd or any media using ondemand scanner thats the time when it consumes a lot of resources but it has a feature to pause scanning automatically incase if other process wants to run.

Currently it has detected close to 100+ threats on my PC there were close to

40% Viruses that were totally undetected by norton , rest were malware and adware.

I am just getting rid of all the crap from my system , go kaspersky go.

Also kaspersky has a better interface than NOD 32.

I will stick with Kav 6 since it aint hogging sys resources while background scanning.

Kaspersky 6 dint work for me(compatibility problems with Outpost).....am bak to 5.0.XXX

NOD32 hardly consumes ne resources....actually made me think if it was really working or not !!

Why dont u try Sygate Firewall works without any issues with KAV 6.

Newer Versions has some more added features and better skillset to tackle modern day threats.

Hmmm.....Is it advisable to switch from NOD32 to Kaspersky????

Of course when resources are also concern!

And how much mem does it take??? Coz NOD32 takes about ~20MB...

Does NOD32 have an Intelligent Updater like Norton, which I can use after downloading in my wi-fi broadband enabled laptop for updating the virus definition of NOD32 in my desktop, which is on a dial up ?

I recommend disabling Kaspersky's startup scan to give you a faster pc startup time. And in Kaspersky options tick the option to "give resources to other applications".
