Trip to Nainital.. accommodation advise..

Hi people..

I am planning a family outing to Nainital in the coming week 4d/4n. Anyone who has been there/stays there please suggest good budget hotels? Also, what makes better sense:
1. Booking hotels via travel websites (most have discounts)
2. Contacting the hotel and making a booking.
3. Reach the place, look what is available and then book..

Also, please suggest tourist spots around the place.
 
Regarding how to book, I prefer the first approach. Works out cheaper than booking directly at the hotel in most cases, and also gives peace of mind.
 
there's not much to see there, all the lakes are same, boating should be done in the main Nainital...then just on the outskirts is a cave garden, you should go see it, everything else is common like other places
 
The climate there is awesome everytime. I live in Bareilly, just 145KMs from nainital, and its like every year, i visit the place. I found the place much better than musoorie and shimla. Get there and get the hotel, specially on the mall road, u can get bargain prices. From there, there are many other small small places and spots u can go like zoo, bhimtal, snow view etc etc.
