truly WIRELESS internet service in india

Hi all people here...i had a look at many posts here but was unable to actually figure out what exactly suited me...so i thought why not put my exact requirements here so that people who know more than me here can give a more appropriate solution:

A little background:

I have a laptop and i have to travel very frequently all over India...this is because of my recent job requirement...

I have been exploring ways in which i can connect to internet "wirelessly" while say i am in train or my hotel room in any city in india...

Out of all the options available now...reliance only seems to be the option where true "wireless" internet is possible...

But the speed is a killer in the sense that at times its pathetic far below 115kbps they claim...

From reading all the posts here in this forum it appears bsnl is the best choice for broadband at higher speeds...(but it is not wireless i think)

QUESTION: However, i was just wondering whether it was possible to actually use internet wirelessly at higher speeds (as fast as possible and available in india) when i travel or am not in delhi but say in mumbai or some other city...or while on train...

Apart from reliance which i know does offer true wireless internet...is there any service provider which offers wireless internet but at high speeds (unlike reliance whose speed is pathetic at times)....

thank u for ur valuable time and consideration...

hope someone will be able to point me in right direction...as of now reliance seems to be the only option...

Reliance speeds used to be very good. They are still good here in Mumbai but the connection seems to be very picky on the location. Some places it just wont work properly and in some p[laces you will get download speeds of 10-12KBps.
But it has suddenly started to act weird these days.

The only other option is use of EDGE phone as modem. But that too aint too fast. Almost same as dialup or slightly better in reality.

Be it reliance or EDGE or GPRS. Pings are horrible on any wireless services available in india. browsing is pain on all. Download speeds are good but due to high pings the browsing is much slower than dialup.
TATA is gona roll out their service shortly for all their mobile users but dont expect it to be any better than reliance.

Maybe you should try accesing internet from TATA Indicom mobile phones, which work on same technology as Reliance(CDMA), i think they might have a better service than Relaince, 'cause now that they own VSNL, they ought to be having lot of bandwidth.

The issue is not the bandwidth.
Current CDMA 1.0 will give 144KBps tops be in TATA or Reliance.
And with CDMA the problem of larger ping will be there.
The new 3G is suppose to change that and CDMA 2.0 is due too.
But at the moment there aint too many options.

Sorry for bumping an old thread. Got a reliance r-connect card today. It seriously rocks! Getting around 8-10KBps constant. The convenience of plugging in a PCMCIA card and immediate internet access is just amazing. Right now I'm sitting on my bed with a laptop typing this message :)

Well you are lucky. I used to get a maximum of 12 KBps, mostly got 7... but now the thing sucks except possibly at night... anyway it is a backup.
As for the feeling of sitting on a bed using a laptop - well I know it. I use my own home wifi network ;)

^^ half my evening posts on TE are typed on my Loo pot ;)

Reliance is good only for use while travelling, that too via a regular CDMA Phone + USB cable route...that PCMCIA card is way too expensive to be any good...

The card has much better reception than the phone for data transfer. Also you don't have to carry unnecessary baggage. The phone doesn't have unlimited data plans either.

umm, Dunno where you stay Chaos , but I'd have used that PCMCIA card if I didn't have any BB options in my neighborhood ....

What I do (and would perhaps suggest to to other heavy net users ) is this:

- Use a BB connection at home (cheaper, faster and mor reliable than reliance)..set up a cheap home 802.11 b network for <2K for freedem from wires

- Use Reliance while travelling using a cheap CDMA phone and a cheap USB cable

Well its obvious that this cant replace a BB connection. Its only meant for access while travelling. I didnt pay for the card either. My company did!

Not only laptops... even an ATI AIW X800XT in his siggy...

And another rig with a 6800 Ultra....

Aaah the perks of working for MS... :P
