For those who are too attached to their iPhones or Android-powered smartphones to even think about trying out the Windows Phone platform, Microsoft has launched a new HTML5 web app that it hopes will convince you to change your mind.
The app allows you to test out a number of Windows Phone functions — such as checking out status updates from your friends and family on Facebook, replying to SMS messages, viewing appointments in your calendar, and reading emails — by simply visiting a page in your web browser. There’s very little you can do with it really, other than demo a few simple features. But if you’ve never used Windows Phone before, this is a great way to see what it looks like and how it works. And I think its absolutely genius from Microsoft. People become attached to the systems and devices that they are familiar with, when in fact, Windows Phone could actually be better suited to some and they just don’t know it yet. I’ve been playing with it for a while this morning, and despite being devoted to my iPhone, I’m itching to get my hands on another Windows Phone device and discover more — so Microsoft’s ploy clearly works. To play around with it yourself, simply visit Windows Phone Demo using a mobile browser on your iPhone or Android-powered device. Ironically, as Gizmodo notes, the app doesn’t actually work in a real Windows Phone browser. Not that you’d want it to — you have the system for real — but I thought that was a little humorous. If you’ve played around with the Windows Phone demo on your smartphone, leave me a comment and let me know what you think of it. Has it persuaded you to try out Microsoft’s platform?
