HP and Toshiba show off new external HD DVD drives
While the XBOX 360's external HD DVD has been getting the bulk of the attention in recent months, there are two other external players vying for your attention. As far as we know, the HD DVD drive for the XBOX 360 is only compatible with that console and not PCs, so customers can look to solutions from Toshiba and Hewlett Packard.Toshiba showed off its external USB 2.0 based solution that looks like its slim SD-L902A HD DVD notebook drive put into a black enclosure. The SD-L902A features an 8MB buffer and can read and write to HD DVD-ROM/HD DVD-R and can read/write to standard CDs and DVDs.
Also on tap is an external HD DVD drive from HP. The new hd100 drive (PDF) is also a USB 2.0 solution and supports HD DVD-ROM/HD DVD-R, DVD and CD media. The drive can write to DVD rewriteables, but inexplicably cannot write to standard DVD-Rs according to PC World.
Pricing and availability for Toshiba’s external HD DVD drive aren’t yet available. Pricing was also not mentioned for the HP hd100 although the company expects the drive to ship before the end of the year.
