docs.sun.com is a good place to start and Bach's desjgn of unix os is great book.

for linux, check "programming linux" wrox publications book. good one for starters.

i would recommend, like, a "unix for dummies" kinda book to get up and running quickly... you can read these in-depth books later on depending on your commitment levels...

Dont remember what I read for Unix but Operating System Concepts by Galvin is very good for operating systems.
