I had a similar problem with my ipad .It used to open apps and type all by itself ,tried everything but issue was still there .Even Apple did not have a clue what was happening, only solution was RMA.

Touchscreen of my Palm Pixi stopped working within one day after I received it

Most of the HTC issues were touch screen becoming non responsive and not acting crazy like OP'case and the replacement ipad i had for one day.
