1) would it be better to get a Phenom II X2 - 555 BE and unlock it rather than buying a Phenom II X4 945 or is the X4 945 significantly better in performance and worth the extra cost?

2)What DDR2 board for the unlocking would you guys recommending for unlocking it? (thats under 4k)

3) Can every 555 BE be unlocked or there's a certain batch I should look for?

Reply:

1) Ph II X4 B55 performs better than Ph II 945 since its build on Ph II X4 965 BE die.

2) Look for Biostar mobo, unlocking is easy on modern boards with updated bios.

3) Till now 99.99% hav been unlocked to X4. look for the batch no. in other thread.

any 785/790 mobo [with SB 710/750] can unlock provided u have right BIOS. u can flash it to required BIOS version anytime.

Biostar TA 785GE 128 : 4k [really great mobo and a solid OCer].

ECS 785 : 4.5k great features like dual esata and good pwm cooling. good OCer too.

Gigabyte 785 U2SH: 4.6k [good built quality and good enuf features and gr8 OCer].

All three are micro ATX form factor mobos.

Biostar TA790GXB A2+ @ 4.5k, excellent board, highest unlock %.

IMO all X2 555 B.E.s are unlockable, atleast 1 core is. But many sites have done it's review, and they all get it not only unlocked but also 4GHz OC and higher with aftermarket cooler.

+1
TA 790 GXB A2+ is one of best Overclockable Mobo ive ever seen with 790 chipset.

any board with sb 710 or 750 are able to unlock processor but biostar boards are best and have bighest % of unlocking better go for biostar

I've also asked something along the similar lines here. I've listed some motherboard recommendations I got from others and also links to places with successful unlocks. You might wish to read that.

Thanks for all the help guys.

@ ShahJahan- I checked your thread and the links, seems that the ECS motheroards do not allow unlocking of processors so I'll be going for Biostar.

I'll be getting these parts on Monday :-

- Palit 9800gt 512mb

- Corsair 400CX 400W

- AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE

Lets hope they cost me under 18k ^^;

Thanks again for all the help over the past week, guys. I'll let you all know once I unlock the processor.

Newegg.com - Open Box: BIOSTAR TA790GXB A2+ AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX ATX AMD Motherboard

This motherboard doesn't seem to support AM3 processors. Could you recommend any other Biostar board under 4.5k?

It's backward compatible AFAIK....this board is a DDR2...

If u want AM3 board, you'll have to shell out DDR3 most probably, for 790GX chipset.

Couldn't get the parts on Monday because the dealer would only take cash. :(

Anyway, I have around 1k extra, which of the two options would you recommend for spending them? :-

1) Get the Gigabyte 785 U2SH instead of the Biostar TA 785GE 128

2) Keep the Biostar board and get the Corsair 450vx 450w psu instead of the Corsair 400cx 400w

I am gonna get the parts at 2 pm IST so its kind of urgent. ^^;

Thanks again.

i belive only starting batch of processors were able to be unlocked to 4 core
with specific mobos only

though iam not sure

c ya

Thanks for the advice guys but I got the 785gm 128m.

This are the parts I ordered:-

Phenom II x2 555 BE

Biostar TA785GE 128m

Corsair 450vx

Palit 9800gt 512 mb

Cost : 18.6/-

Lets hope the processor unlocks and I am able to post some benchmarks ^^

Again thanks for the help guys, getting the right parts would have been impossible without help from this community. :D

Mate,

Many congos to you,

Finally you made up your mind, nice choice of components going in there!

All the best for you unlock ! hope you have bagged a good chip.

Do remember to post your experience.

Thanks

A friend was able to unlock AMD 555BE. The batch that he had was 1003GPMW with Gigabyte 785 U2SH but he ended up bumping NB and a little bit of VCORE bump to get it 24 hour stable. Not too sure if it will be helpful, but you can always try to ask the dealer to send you a particular batch. You can google out and see which batch has higher chances to unlock.

Thanks for the advice sorcerer, I had a looked up a few batch numbers and gave them to the dealer, theres another thread about them.

I haven't received the parts yet, will get them around 11 am tomorrow, I'll let you guys know. :)
