Forum Feedback Upcoming changes in user ladder titles

Perhaps simple is better?
Simple occupies too much space and cannot be done on a mobile view. Plus you can’t get information easily from number of posts and likes. Is it high or less by forum standards. You have keep a lot of information in you head to process. A simple hierarchy just tells you how many steps up is someone from another just by looking at a single letter.

This is proposed.

Not a fan of the proposed changes, what is the rationale behind it? To increase traffic/engagement here? m0ar ad revenue? It might only generate m0ar repeated threads/questions about "what does Tier E" mean but then I guess people won't even know what's the difference between "Adept" and "Skilled" etc - I had to look it up too.

How about a different approach? Keep the current (few) badges and start sending automated (monthly?) private messages like "You are only X quality posts away from being promoted from Adept to Skilled" !!!

The new ladder system looks pretty simple to understand at a glance and removes confusion in my opinion. I like it.

However, how would the new ladder system affect the access to exclusive classifieds? I've always thought the entry point to the exclusive classifieds should be based on deal feedback scores rather than a tier level as it is confined to the marketplace reputation. For example, it should be available to folks who have 100+ or 150+ positive deal feedback score.

I have been here for around 3 years and have only bought 1 thing in those years. That too only recently. Even for that 1 purchase I haven't received any rating. So [0 0 0] is the rating for me based on market transactions. I can't even imagine how would a person like me, get to 100 ratings and that too positive.
There might come some deal that I would like to be part of but will not be able to participate in because of this.
I do not shop a lot, so 100 or even 20 ratings is a far dream. Yet I contribute to the forum from time to time as many do.
This change would just divide the forum into people who don't buy much and contribute to talks and people who buy things a lot.

Even the exclusive marketplace will suffer because of this as you won't even have old forum people with low number of deals participating in them.

That makes a lot of sense. I hadn't considered the appeal of a good deal for seldom shoppers who have been a part of the community for a lot of time.

What you are referring to are badges. Those are also planned at a later date. Badges, title ladder will co exist.

IIRC when TE went down for some major maintenance or something years ago, someone from here (perhaps one of the mods themselves, not sure) had started an F1 forum to which a lot of TE members migrated briefly. That forum had badges I believe. It was fun while it lasted but not being into F1 at all, after the initial enthu, I just dropped off. :D

Thank you for bringing this up. I had almost forgot about this. Currently it is 1 year of membership and 1000 posts. We can continue with it as-is.

Or we can link it to something easier like 500 posts and 250 likes. Which is level G. Or even go down to level F, which is 200 posts and 100 likes. This is not easy to break for many users.

Or we can also have a mix of both. Keep if 1 year and 1000 posts for old users. But keep it at level F for new users.

Oh yeah f1fever.com or f1-fever.in, something like that. It was fun. One of the admin's started it.

Can we increase the required likes to posts ratio?
From 2:1 to let's say 1:1?
I have 560 posts and 2098 rating, I would just have to make 3500 posts that don't engage anyone to move up ladders which is counterproductive

Ideally the ratio should be 1:1 but not making it so due to following reasons:
  • Have to balance it with the fact that Likes/Reaction was introduced only 7-8 years ago. Many old time users who are still active will lose out due to that.
  • A high likes to post ratio is good for communities which are QnA based and technical in nature where every post has to be top notch. We are a community first and will have diverse views on all kinds of domains and topics.
  • We can move to 1:1 ratio later with sufficient notice of say 1 year for anyone to not feel short changed. Lets take that decision in June 2025, mid year.
I see you have a admirable ratio of 4:1, but you didn't do it for levels or titles anyway.

This makes sense in the profile. Imagine how it will look if everyone makes one liner posts. 90% of the page would be blank due to postbit area being so tall and post itself being so short.
small icons and logos could may be save space. A static display of all the attribute would be much better idea than hovering on the name . And we move away from so called titles and classism . i would even
go to horizontal bars with numbers and a negative bar for each attribute.

In addition
i really must say we need to find away to appreciate/acknowledge people who are helping through credit/card and debit cards during offer times some ratings for that as well.

I don't know how feasible this would be, but just a thought:

OCN used to have a system where a user accrued a visible flame (their logo) on their profile based on likes/rep count. Each flame was added after crossing a specific number-based milestone (such as x posts/x likes). The max was 5 flames. I went up to three :joyful:. They got rid of it when the site was overhauled.

It would maybe be a nice touch to have something here so that helpful members stand out.

This new system will definitely save some space and time to track a member level "at a glance" but also what I see is that lot of members will be on a certain level and many will be stuck there forever. What I suggest is that years and activeness in forum should also be a part of the ranking evaluation rather than based on post and reactions only. Some badge and icons will be visually more pleasing.

What does activeness constitute if not posts and reactions.

Current system has 300, 1000, 5000, 10000 posts. Its easier to get stuck on the same level in the current system. I think your concern is with reactions also becoming a part of the criteria. Think of it this way, you are making 10 posts but not even 1 out of that is worth 5 likes. I think 1:2 is a good enough target to start with, you yourself are almost at 2:1. That's seriously good.

With every system there is an abuse and I expect this also to be abused to some extent but we will handle that also in the future with some intelligence built in.

It's understandable that being a mere observer is not a contributor to the forum. What I meant is that with older people(who once actively contributed) should be on a higher tier or atleast a badge that shows their seniority and quality of opinion should be there. Every member as days goes buy with time gets lesser and lesser time here in forum as they get engaged in their daily life but they once were actively participating in this forum and hence their contribution should not be judged based on total post and likes or market place ratings.
Also it should be made more easier for senior members to reach higher tier taking into account the time factor, like getting 1x for new, 1.1x for 1years, 1.2x for ...years and so on.

Without a proper mechanism a new member with more time can easily surpass those people and get higher tier and a possible "disrespect" for old members based on their low tier grade might emerge.

It might happen, might not happen, just a wild suggestion that came.
As always any new change is always welcomed.

It's just a mundane question to the mods and other members. Why should I care about the Levels? I am at Level G, so what? What am I gaining over a Level D and losing over a Level Z? Are these levels only to satisfy somebody's egotrip?

Off topic. (Merge to a suitable thread if necessary)

Mods,
There used to be a section called "I want to Buy" or "WTB".
Is that removed? not able to find it.
