yay, it's that time of the year again,....Time for my winter sojourn into the Himalayas ...

This year's intended destination is Kinnaur and Spiti while Srinagar/Sonamarg/Pahalgam is the backup destination if the former starts looking tricky

Intend to start from Chennai on the morning of 26th, grab a MUV in delhi and head to Kinnaur , stay in Kalpa for a while and then head over to Kaza

Intend to be back in Delhi by the next Sunday and head back to chennai by Sunday evening

And while on the topic, Thought I'll share some of the pics from my last year's trip :)

Anyway, before I post a new thread on that topic, I decided to share some of the pics from my 2007 Winter trip to Leh

Heading to Pangong

The Dalai Lama's Summer palace

His holiness sure knows how to pick the best possible spot

View around the palace

Frozen rivulets

Way to Chang La

My Pro - Trek died in the cold (fortunately to live again)

Water freezes in side the car with heater on at full blast

Valley beyond chang-La

First glimpse of the lake

The seven colored Pangong - tso

Time to head back

getting cloudy and dark at Chang-La

Chang-La may seem docile but is one of the most treacherous passes I have done

Way to Nubra

Smooth Tarmac

Lone Petrol Pump

The Indus meets the Zanskar

Land of the Gods

The Mighty Indus - Shores freezing up

Some random frozen fall

The sandy hills of Lamayuru

Way to lamayuru

Destination Nubra,

advised return by the army jawans from Khardung-La top :(

(apparently major snow was predicted that night which meant we'd have got stuck in Nubra if we proceeded further and tried to return the next day)

Way to K-Top

Unexpected traffic jam

Qualis does a spin

Whoa, look at that road

here is hoping the Spiti trip turns out to be equal, if not better :cool2:

Hey man amazing trip... me just went there in september/oct... on bikes.....

Khardung La, kaza, spiti, nubra, pin, hunder disket all covered, but we had no times for the amazing lakes.... maybe luck next time.

Good luck.

Hey nice pics there.Kinnaur is one of the best places in Himachal.. Dont let weather and the road conditions bog you down, enjoy the adventure. :D

You actually SAW all these places? :O.. AMAZING!!!! :O

Have fun in your next trip :D.. And don't forget to share the pics :)

Dude include expenses so will be best treats for New Arrangers who plan to visit different places. Also suggest what to avoid & must Visit places.

Nice pics.

Great photos mister czar! But aren't all roads to Leh and back closed from Oct-May each year? When I was in Leh this August, I was told that people are practically trapped in Leh once the winter starts. In the sense, they can't use the roadways to go anywhere as all the major passes are buried under snow.

Nice, but didn't you recently buy an Enfield? What's the total mileage on your bike? I'm asking because it seems rather soon for a major biking trip before even breaking in your engine.

The entry roads into the valley are closed (i.e. Rohtang pass from the Manali side and Zozi La (IIRC) from the kashmir side

The passes within the rain shadow region of Leh do not receive excessive snow so the BRO keeps them clear

If you can get into Leh in Dec/Jan (= Fly in from Delhi), you can go pretty much wherever you want to go within the Ladakh region

Folks planning to think of doing something similar, beware that winter temps in Leh town itself range from -5 to -25 C...

and the higher reaches can go extremely extremely low..

Combine that with the thin air (given the altitude ) and you have a potentially dangerous combination

Unless you have prior experience of high altitude (and no, Ooty/Shimla/Manali don't count) and extremely cold weather, this is a trip best done in the summer months

he bought a Used Enfield, and infact afaik it was a bit too battered and hence may not have been too suitable for the trip but the bike endured it all.

Damn amazing pics czar, I can only dream that I will be able to take time off to go to places like these.......

Err well how did you conclude that? I bought this brand new bike on 1st November 2004 and went on the same one. It easily clocked 4050 kms in total (includes a visit to my friend SidhuPunjab's place in Moga 160 kms from chandigarh)

I still cant believe i drove on such extreme roads and had no puntures at all. Infact all minor problems i faced were my fault.

1) I had not changed the brake fluid of the front disc brake since i bought it, which finished just before Manali, hence i got it refilled.

2) The front disc brake shoes got used up so got new ones in Manali. (again were 4 years old so... ;))

3) Apart from this no problemo whatsoever, i was expecting more repairs but there were NONE to my surprise. Even local mechanics in Manali (they are one of the best bullet mechanics) told me Thunderbird AVL is pretty reliable and i could'nt agree less ;)

4) Bike has clocked 28000-30000 KMs till date. Since the time i've had it, only thing i had to got repaired/replaced were its tappets once.

Nice to know that AVL engines are reliable.BTW ,If you tune on NDTV Goodtimes channel ,they covered Himalayan Trip by Royal Enfield.

:)

Thunderbird is also "Royal Enfield". I know the standard 350CC is very popular coz its the oldest enfield, mechanics are used to it more, second hand are available easily etc. AVL is still very new, these are the words of manali mechanics, noone really says in open but everyone knows thunderbird is more in demand as its simple to drive (left gear etc) and more comfortable to drive for long hours... :) foreigners prefer it but its also more expensive and parts are costly hence standard is more popular. ;)

Back to OP's topic :) We have our own bullet thread started by U :)

PS: I dont give a rat's arse to what NDTV states/broadcasts same with AajTak et News 24 etc etc (No offences)
