Ok, I'm planning on upgrading my rig after almost 3 years.

Heres what I current have:

AMD 3500+

1GB PC 2700 RAM :(

Sapphire X1800XT

MSI RS482M4

Heres what I'm planing on

Intel Q6600

Abit IP35-E

4/8GB ram

Ati 4850/4870

My priorities are:

3D work (Maya) and Compositing

Gaming

Music

etc

Now, I need some advice on the mobo and gpu.I don't indent to OC my proccy, since I have heard a lot of people mentioning that there is hardly any difference in performance gain. Also, my display res is 1440x900, do I need a 4870 or will the 4850 suffice? I was thinking about the 4870 because its GDDR5 and seems to be more future proof than the 4850 (This is a long term upgrade). Also, I have a Powersafe 500W PSU, will it be enough for the components? And finally, I've got the Super Lanboy, will the components, especially the gpu fit in without too much difficulty?

My old PC is really lagging behind now, I was forced to discontinue an important Maya project because my PC just couldn't handle it.Also, I was on 2GB of OCZ Gold ram, but that died and I'm currently on my old PC's 1GB PC 2700 ram.

Thanks in advance.

Heres what I'm planing on

Intel Q6600
Abit IP35-E
4/8GB ram
Ati 4850/4870

.

all chOice's you have made are very good :ohyeah:
get ATI 4870 .
4GB RAM will be enough .

which RAM you would be buying ?
if low end RAM modules transcend
good quality then G.SKILL .....with heat sink .resonable price .

if u have more budget for proccy then get Q9650 if available or Q9450 or Q9300 .

Not really decided on the ram yet, it won't be anything fancy since I wont be OC'ing most probably.

Less performance scaling above 3.2Ghz, but 2.4G of Quad is IMO less to enjoy full capability of HD 4XXX/GeFroce 2XX series. U should get E8400, @ stock clock, it has enough juice for latest games.

Now if U wanna quad keeping in mind future, then buddy Nehalem will be mainstream next yr, launch this yr Q3/Q4. and its 40% faster than current Yorkfields clock to clock. and by the time need for quad will arrise, current quads will be dirt cheap, as U know Q6600 was launched @ 851$ and selling 224$ now, tech keeps moving, everything will get obsoletted 1 day, buy best in todays date, E8400 suits U better. :)

Edit : Just checked UR priorities, get 9450.

I need some advice on the mobo and gpu.I don't indent to OC my proccy, since I have heard a lot of people mentioning that there is hardly any difference in performance gain.

The 9450 is out of my budget. The reason why i choosed the quad is because its much better when it comes to multitasking, and as for me, I do alot of simultaneous renders which would use the quad's cores.

What about the gpu? and will my psu be enough and will it fit into my cabby?

Get 4850 instead of 4870, spend saved money on CPU.

PM Stormblast, he is very good in rig having above priorities, and regarding RAM too 4/8GB. :hap2:

Also dont know 500W is dual rail or single rail model, no idea, Bikey is good encyclopedia of Powersafe SMPS. PM him too. :ashamed:

if ATX mobo easily fit in cabby, then no need to worry abt GPU, they aint longer than 9.6"

Stick to the quad since 3D rendering is your priority.

The 4870 would roughly be an inch longer than your present card.

The 4850 would be 1/2 an inch longer. Calculate the space in your cabinet accordingly.

The Powersafe has got to go :P

Get a VX450 at minimum.

You have no choice but to get a Q6600 G0 or something better. :)
As of now, Q6600 is still a good chip to buy if buying right now and cannot afford the Q9300/9450.
Still much too vfm to ignore, even after taking into consideration any advantages with the newer chips.
OCing does help.
Just like 4cores is almost 4x the rendering power of a single core when it comes to 3D stuff (in a lame way i know:ashamed: ) every bit of OC helps too.
So if someone runs their Q6600 at 3.6G, that's also 2 more cores added to the quad (again in a lame way.:P )
There are noticeable gains in rendering and maybe stormblast can shed more light on the same as he runs all his Quads OCed with good coolers and good psus.
IP-35E is still a good mobo to buy for it's price- but it's discontinued by Abit is what i have heard.
Since you won't OC, which is not an issue, any good mobo will do fine.
See if you can squeeze in a P45 mobo.
the Asus P5QE is a decent one i hear- there maybe cheaper options from MSI, etc.
Check with the gurus on which mobo is a good buy for it's price- especially keeping quality in mind.
4GB or 8GB, you need to use 64-bit OS.
Else get 4GB and make use of the available 3.2GB. :P
I have friends with Q6600 at stock and managing quite well even with 2x1GB DDR2 800- rigs were assembled last year. :)

And anyways, for most semi-pro and pro 3D artists, especially those on a budget, 2x2GB DDR2 800 is good enough. :)
Locally bought Transcend 2x2GB sticks or some low Cas stuff bought from the US, whatever is cheaper, works great.
I would say get get it locally from a reputed dealer who will handle any rma requests speedily. (though i hope you don't need it.)
New rig- new psu. :)
Old psu not at all enough for Q6600+4850, for you especially.
Corsair VX450 is bare minimum imho and hopefully you will thank us one day for the same.
A bad psu or overloaded psu doen't die many a times but kills volts-sensitive stuff like RAM, HDD, gfx card pretty fast.
Who knows, maybe the psu killed ur OCZ.
SLB is ok- get a good fast fan for the rear though.
A good quality and high cfm or even a cheapo Glacialtech 120mm as exhaust will make the SLB good enough for the higher heat output of the new rig.
If you afford to buy a new case, CM690/590 will serve you very well.
But i suggest you try out the SLB with a fast exahust fan at the rear. :cool2:
Keep sidepanel closed and keep the lower 3.5" bay cover open. :P
Front fan maybe be kept the same low cfm blue led one that came oem or maybe replaced for a fan no faster than 55-65cfm. :)

One of the Mastahs has spoken. :cool2:
About the gfx card, i do not know much.
Maybe you can use the 1800XT till it gives up or you give up on it :P and then get whatever suits you best. :)
Gaming wise- 4850 is the flavour of the season and also a very vfm card.
But some may say it consumes too much power at idle- say when you are busy rendering.
Als i am not aware if the 8800GT(G92) and newer nvidia cards offer any advantages over Ati 48xx cards when it comes to 3D modelling, etc...
Of the people i know closely and whose names i can recollect at this instance, Stormblast sir and Lord Zhopudey sir will be in a better position to comment on the same, being directly involved with the same line of work. :)

p.s. Can anyone tell me if the Q9300 is better/worse for '3D rendering' than the Q6600, taking into the account the stock speed and the Cache? :ashamed:

You could get a 1333MHz FSB quad (maybe Q9450 or Q9300) rather than the Q6600 (FSB 1066 only). They cost more though.

Thanks alot for the advice BIKeINSTEIN.Well the Q6600 is pretty much fixed for now.I need some advice for the gpu now and the psu, since Mr.BIKeINSTEIN has suggest the VX450 atleast, what do you suggest from the 2, Cooler Master 500 W eXtreme and the Cooler Master 600-eXtreme?

Also, the gpu, will the 4850 be enough for my 14x9 res and gaming? or will the 4870 be more future proof?

Ok, then what do you suggest apart from the VX 450? because 450 seems to sound pretty insufficient and I don't want the PSU to cause any problems.

I am no pro, but going for a CF ready board and 4850 for now and when the need is felt getting another 4850 sounds reasonable to me.

another suggestion would be to buy an elcheapo proccy say the E2180 at the moment, OC it and wait for a few months for the 9450 prices to come down and u would also have saved some more money by that time... get that 9450 then and enjoy :P

For what- for what pupose do you suggest 4750 CF? :S

I hope you read well and learn to understand/comprehend priorities.
He has mentioned he lost an assignment due to low rendering power- his Quad will be at 100% load when he uses it professionally unlike people who get Quads coz they get more core per buck. :P
It's not a TP/gaming rig only- he has professional commitments to meet too- if i have understood Floccy correctly in the past few years on TE.
So it's now, now now. :P

Mere baap- A CM extreme power 600 costs 3k odd, VX450 costs 3K odd.
This topic has been dicussed to death and beyond. :(
Read this thread thoroughly and you will undertstand why VX450 is enough and CM600 is relatively crap.
http://www.techenclave.com/graphic-cards/hd-3870-vip-400w-27a-12v-109305-2.html
(And he who asked powersafe 500W single rail is enough doubts Corsair VX450 is pretty ironic. :P You have a lot to learn about PSUs- esp rails, power and power distribution. :))
Just becoz you are an old member here- for you one last time.
VX450 has almost all the power on its 12v rails + Corsair rates it pretty conservatively + its more than 80% efficient against 65-70% of cheapo psus.
So going by how CM or other cheapo PSUs manufs label their PSU, its easily a 550-600W if you want to rate it that way.
Read that thread in the link above and all other posts in preceeding and following pages as well- please.
And i said VX450 is minimum- knowing it will run a Q66+IP+4GB+4850+2xHDD+2xODD+2-3x120mm fans pretty fine. :P
Else get a Corsair TX650/HX620 and throw anything at it- similar to CM or other brand 700-850W- 6K+ odd. :D
If you are really smart, you won't scrimp on the PSU- that's a challenge. :P

p.s. Call me Bikey- Mr.BIKeINSTEIN sounds like some super whacko from some storybook.

Lol thanks Mr.BIKeINSTEIN, I'm a total noob when it comes down to PSU's, that's my only weakness in my PC knowledge.

I just called up Prime, and got some quotes for the components.

Q6600 for 9.4k

Abit IP35-E for 5.4k

4GB (2x2) Transcend for 3.6k

VX450 for 2.3k and 650 for 6.3

4850/4870 for 13k/19k :S (Planning on ordering if from newegg mostly though, still need advice on this)

^^u mean vx450 for 3.3k :P
try shops other than prime man :)
assemble it yourself by collecting parts from wherever u get them cheap :)
