Budget 51-70k Upgrade from i5 2500k or wait?

If you're not oc'ing, and are not planning to use a 12 or 16 core chip, then not really. Just avoid bottom of the barrel, ie, cheapest boards if you can. Otherwise most mid range B450 (~8k) and lower mid range B550 (~11k) should be able to handle a non overclocked 8 core chip with ease, and sometimes overclocked as well (outliers such as AsRock B450 Pro4).
plan is for a 5600x or 5800x with b550 gaming plus (asus or msi) or maybe a strix b550f and the hyperx ram. if i use a b450 tomahawk will it affect my gpu upgrade path in future?

It will be sad to upgrade just for stability. Any other things are unstable ? Could you run these tests ?

1. Youtube only crashes in high resolution ? Or only when full screened ? Could you check ?

2. Install free non-activated windows to a spare hard disk or maybe pendrive (if supported) from here : https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10. See if that is also giving the problem. If so, windows installation might have an issue - I don't know how to fix but a reinstall should most likely fix it.

3. Or boot from a live image of any linux (e.g. ubuntu https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop) without installing. Youtube crashes here too ?

4. Memory test : download free, create pen drive and boot from it : https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm. Start test and let it run overnight, it will accumulate any memory errors.

5. If it is a specific kind of crash, like PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA : you could google for it and some solutions work like magic. For this, some solutions also ask to check disk drive using tools within windows, at least chkdsk. If that gives an error, a 10k SSD upgrade should solve your problems.

bought the upgrade parts yesterday. crashes happen randomly. i know that the ram slots on my board are iffy. youtube was just an example, crashes while gaming, crashes while browsing, has issues with memory detection randomly and refuses to boot at times.

Congrats man your setup has lasted this long. I had the same i5-2500K/z77 which lasted until 2019. After this legendary chip, I now have R5 3600/Tomahawk B450 Max/32GB RAM , 1060 as backup machine which I don't use for gaming but don't think this should be bottleneck for generational GPU upgrade. Do consider carefully the upgrade path/support duration of next few years if you don't wish to upgrade sooner

Thank you. I upgraded to R5 5600x Asrock B550 Steel legend. Will consider GPU upgrade after the prices descend from orbit.

  • CPU -
  • Motherboard - any compatible motherboard
  • RAM

With ddr5 around the corner I don't suggest spending too much here.
Look into a used 10400 + basic mobo + basic ram for around 20K

congratulations to you. The update must be really significant. you have 3 times the amount of threads now? good choice on Asrock, I am using Asrock board too, been 100% reliable since 4 years.

yes. quite happy with the upgrade.using asrock for 10years now. keeping an eye on the temps. hits 75 while gaming and idles in 40s. havent used amd before so not sure whats the reference temps for indian climate.

ah that sounds about right for AMD, long as it doesn't cross that mark under consistent heavy usage it's fine. What cooler are you running?

I think you should upgrade. The cumulative performance jump from sandybridge to the latest zen and 12th gen cpus is very noticeable.
