Hi all,

I have the following config right now:

Amd 3200+ s939 Winchester (OC'ed to 2.47GHz)

Asus A8N-E v1 (onboard sound had stopped working somehow. I use creative snd card.)

2x1GB Transcend DDR1 400MHz 2.5-3-3 (@ 225.x MHz 2.5-3-3-5 1T) (can do the same @240MHz)

I also have a 7900gt that is sufficiently OCed as well. I knew my cpu is bottlenecking my vid card but it didn't really show up in any games till now. So now I want to do something about it. I want to upgrade. I hear conroe/allendale is the schnitz right now, so that will mean that I have to change the three mentioned parts as one.

So please do advise on a config. Damage to be lesser than 22~25K.

I am not intune with the various chipsets that are out now so I'll just say that I like to OC as much as possible and want it to last atleast a couple of years.

I also want to know if we are at the cusp(ie,less than a month) of some drastic price slash or a new architecture debut and that I should gain more by waiting for it.

Also, if and when I do upgrade, I will be left with my old rig. The problem is that I don't know any dealer here that takes used parts. So can anyone assess the worth of this heap? If u can name a good enough price and you live locally, I'll even sell it off to ya. Here's a superpi run I posted here some time ago.

hmm.. 25k..

Id have to say..

E6300 + P5B-E/MSI 965P Neo + 2 GB Transcend/Corsair/Kingston RAM.

9k + 9k/6k + 10k..

Allendales performance at the sames speeds as a Conroe, say, 2.8 Ghz, is almost the same. Maybe 5% off.

The 2mb L2 Cache, is hardly making a difference, except in SuperPI times :P.

More RAM is always good, no matter if your on a P2 266 Mhz, or a Octo Core, Dual Processor System.

Ok ppl, I now might have a 40K budget, and if the old parts get sold, I might've 6 to 8K more.

So what config (cpu, mobo, proc) would I be able to get? :D

Here's what I have in mind:

CPU+Mobo:

I am very tempted at bodka's E6700 + P5W-DH sale. But, since I've never bought 2nd hand anything ,let alone cpu/mobo, so here's my doubt: what is the major concern that I have to be, well, concerned with here? Basically, is this a bad idea? (hope not, of course)

Memory:

I am stumped here. I thought of taking a 2gB transcend 533/667, but now I am thinking of getting one of them cellshocks or similar from memory-configurator. I've seen a couple of deals in the market section but I don't know which one of them is better either. I would appreciate it if you can point me to a good pair of sticks.

Please keep in mind that I will be OCing but only casually -ie.,on stock coolers.

Case:

I have a modded zebronics elegance case which is performing ok for now with all the fans. Do you think I can squeeze in a case after all this? The case is really optional, unless the motherboard doesn't fit in it, of course.

Edit: Ofcourse, any appraisal on the old parts are still welcome.

:) I would always advice against second hand stuff....though it is only a matter of perception I would never probably give away my hard earned money for 2nd hand stuff...

Regarding the stuff....I am sure you will soon receive a lot of opinions from the TE gurus

The cellshocks would come to around 21k...excellent stuff for the money

You should be able to accomodate a E6600 + P5W DH/ P5N32-E SLI. For RAM you should be able to get Cellshock DDR2 8000 5-5-5 or Team DDR2 Xtream 667 MHz 3-3-3. If you have a bit more budget, go for Cellshock DDR2 8000 4-4-4 Kit.

If yuo are ordering ram from abraod you may as well order a good cooler also, as this will help you while OCing . Thermalright Xp-120 is good enough

I think the E6700+P5WDH offer is very good as they weren't used that much. But if that offer runs out, I'll buy a E6600+P5WDH.

Coming to ram, is there a way to be sure that I am getting a D9GKX? I wanted to buy a CellShock 1000MHz 5-5-5-15 2GB(out of stock now) and asked their tech support about it and they replied with:

"Thank you for your enquiry. We can guarantee that these use Micron D9 chips but we cannot confirm exactly which version is used unfortunately."

If that memory doens't come into stock soon, what other memory can I take that is in the same price bracket?

i support buying secondhand as long as enough warranty for the product remains

you get the same product for fraction the price

only thing i wouldn't wanna buy online is hdds and optical drives...doesn't take many G's to break them and you never know how the courier will handle it

Cellshock DDR2 1000MHz 4-4-4 is gauranteed D9GKX. In case of 5-5-5 Kit new batches are GKX, so not so sure what batch they will get. I think the CS 5-5-5 Kit is the only 1000 MHz kit that comes in the 275 Euro price bracket on Mem-C and has the possibility of being D9GKX. The rest, you will get lots of 800MHz kits with D9GMH. I suggest you either go for the 4-4-4 kit if its urgent or wait for the 5-5-5 kit.

I've shot them an email asking when the new stock will come. If it will take long I'll have to choose between the cl4 kit and an 800mhz kit.

This is so unfair that I can't buy from a cheaper source :(

I just checked this database of memory chips (DDR2 RAM List) and no xtreem ram has a d9gkx chip. So I might stick with cellshock. This way, there's a chance.

Ok, since Mr.Bodka is unavailable for sometime on account of his work and since me hands have the OC-withdrawal-syndrome, please advise on a new upgrade path.

E6700 + P5W DH deluxe = 30K (from bodka)

E6600 + P5N32-E SLI = 30K (approx)

I won't be upgrading for another couple of years and hence my decision to go to e6700. I recently saw a GO on p5n32-e and wanted to re-evaluate things.

Also, the e6700 in question has the code L628A887. How do I find out if this is of a respectable batch?

Thx.

Hope an ultra 120 is considered sufficient cooling.

Also, isn't P5W dh deluxe better for OC than a P5B deluxe? There's no clear answer anywhere.
