I don't think that they would outperform at same price looking how current HD7XXX are overpriced (especially hd7770 7970).

You are good to go with HD6950 . Though you don't have dx11.1 in it , seeing the slow adoption of dx11 , dx11.1 is a future thing , and by then , you would already have upgraded !

hd6950 "2gb" for 15.9k . If you can spend a bit more for a 2gb version or else your mentioned one is good too (you should definately look at 2gb ones imho , who knows ,you might be lucky to unlock it to full hd6970 ! Particulary the powercolor one 15.9k many success rates) .

If it does unlock to hd6970, no regrets of not waiting for 7870!
