Hi guys.

I have a UPS with me which was bought in 1997 , i dont know what is its VA rating and is of APC make , but the problem is the 3 pins on the behind are not like the ones which come with the ups currently those are too small and cannot be used to connect my desktop hard disk drives , so i was planning to buy one .
I contacted dealers locally they said APC doesnt have good service here locally , so buy iball or numeric or zebronics , i was plannint to buy Iball 600VA(360 watts) price :Rs.1900 or IBall one of arounmd 1000)(600 watts)Price:Rs. 4400 , currently i have a vx550 watt power supply. The amount of backup time is really not of much question to me 3-4 minutes backup is fine with me , so if i buy the Iball 600VA UPS (it has 3*3 pin slots), will it be a problem like ups going to trip while gaming or anything or can i safely buy that.

P.S: My current UPS in no way would be more then 600VA as its a 1997 model and on electricitry cuts it gives easily 3-4 minutes of backup atleast.

Please suggest .

You can get the battery of your current ups replaced and it will most probably start giving normal backup , exide battery costs around 600 , you will also get 50-100 discount for your old battery, if you want to buy new then buy APC the dealer is just trying to sell the brand that sells least first, APC should have good service everywhere.

If those are the sockets which are similar to what comes on regular PSU's then you can use converter cables/ adapters which are easily available. I am using my MODEM with my older APC UPS through a converter cable...

Its not a battery issue as per his post.

@OP: I guess it'll be better to contact the APC registered partners for queries regarding the service and RMA issues.

You can find their details here: Reseller/Partner Locator

However if you're buying Iball, etc just make sure you buy it preferably from a dealer that you know personally as it becomes easier that way in case of a RMA issue.

But nonetheless, its better to buy good brands like APC.

I thought he meant he wants to buy new ups because his current ups only gives 3-4 min backup after reading this ,

missed the line where he wrote he only needs 3-4 minutes

@Arjun : Nope backup aint the issue , the ports are i really doubt there are converter cables for the pin which is provided infact the power supply cable i am using is also a old since it doesnt have a 3 pin port to connect the pwoer cable which comes with the psu monitor etc .

@Kestrel : Thanks for the suggestion will surely contact them.

No one have answered that part of my query whether 600 VA will suffice or do i need to go for 1000VA , if any1 can shed light on that part it will be really good for me.

Which socket is it [attachment=8760:15264.attach]

Just one thing to say, Microtech, Luminous, Intex 600 VA cost just 1200 - 1300 (at Bangalore), Microtech 800 VA double battery cost approx 2550 (at Bangalore) and 1 KVA cost approximately 3300 (a hundred more may be).

So in case you decide to buy a new one, than get it in these rates and not the one quoted by you.

@adi

well then i will need to get the rates from other dealers now , i have no idea how much the ups costs in current days and the dealer i had approached is no1 in looting customers but i just took a quote from him . Will it be fine if i go for a 600 VA (my rig is in my sig :) ) for this rig or i better go for a 800 va one ?,

@arjun : the convertor link uhave pasted again has a normal 3 pin input how shall i put it into my ups i need a reverse of that convertere :).

I would go for a power specialist company like APC or Luminous. (I have had good experience with luminous). IBall is selling everything from Mouse to all accessories. Though I feel that a bigger UPS like RS 800 contains better protection as compared to entry level ones. In a recent spike, a lot of my equpment was damadged including APC 650 VA (some components got burnt) and the computers PSU. But APC RS800 is as if nothing happened.

Just opened the luminous and APC UPS. (Luminous to change the battery and APC because not working)

Components in APC are far superior to Luminous. Moreover Luminous is imported from china and rebranded. So APC for superior protection. My experience with RS 800 is good.

A 600 VA UPS can support upto 360 W approximately. At 300W it will give back up of 3-4 minutes.

Per your config including monitor your total load can cross 300 W easily if everything is on full load.

So, 600 VA will work but 800 VA will be a better investment.

You can calculate the power consumption here

Numeric makes good UPS, so consider it as good as APC.
