Hi,

So its back to school season and I need a basic laptop.

1. Obviously as light as possible since I am going to be carrying it around a lot.

2. Any decent dual core proccy will be fine. Around 2Gb RAM and a 160Gb HDD +, will be running Vista probably.

3. IMPORTANT: Valid warranty in India. I guess Dell and Toshiba qualify on that criteria?

4. I need to tell someone coming over to get it by tomorrow max, so HURRY with the suggestions please :)

Thanks.

Ask Your buddy in US to look into circuit city.. everything is 30-50% off

So if you something at that price without warranty it's a good buy...

well if thats the case then you are better off getting it locally

else if the person whose gonna carry it wudnt mind getting it in a best buy or soething there and has the know how about such stuff then you can give him a basic config info as to which one to pick

else buy the unibody macbook :P

Dell and Toshiba are nowhere going to be light....

I would suggest using discount coupons available on various websites.

As you are a student I would suggest something rugged with a nice backpack which makes the weight disappear.

My suggestion find a lattitude series lappy in dell. Rugged like hell

Corrections:

1. Hes like the friend of a friend so I need to tell the guy what I want by tomorrow and he can order form the web too, no issues there :) Hes coming in some time.

2. Budget: Max Max 700$.

doh, put a few $$ more and get the macbook man, great thing to flaunt at in the college ure gonna be joining :P

Not really. Believe it or not, every second person has a mac :P

Also, I plan on a 30-35k lappy and a 15k Sony ebook reader :ohyeah:

+I am anyway taking my desktop along as well.

Howz this:

Lenovo ThinkPad X61s 7668, Intel® Core™ 2 Duo L7500 LV, 1.6GHz, 12.1" WXGA, 1GB RAM, 160GB, 802.11 a/b/g, Windows Vista Home Basic, 1yr Warranty, 8-Cell Battery » for $649 at Lenovo(IBM ThinkPad)

List Price:$1665 Exp: 02/23/2009 or soon

Final Price : $1665 - $696 - 33% = $649 + Free Shipping + Tax

More tempting option:

Dell Inspiron 13 Laptop

The 655$ config seems good :D

The HP TX series is also a good choice,,just a tad above your budget, but a great lappy nevertheless

@scz: Saw it, but 800-900$ puts it outta my budget. + dont see any great need for a tablet. Right now the Inspiron 13 seems to be the most tempting option. Just need to find someone to carry it over now ;)

one piece of info:

if buying a dell laptop, dont buy it from outlet like bestbuy.

afaik, the warranty is not covered by dell but bestbuy itself. so i dont think u ll ll b abke to avail warranty from dell in india.

btw u can also look out for deals in Dell Outlet on "previously ordered new" systems. and there are also coupons available for use there.

Or u can go through this

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - M305-S4848

Asus - Stylish Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - Blue/Black - X83Vb-X2

1. What is this Dell outlet/previously ordered new thingy? :ashamed: More info please.

2. I am currently looking at Dell only. Asus etc warranty support is iffy even though it might be there. + even Toshiba once I run out of warranty, parts and all might be an issue (LinuxTechie has a very bad exp with his Toshiba bought from US :P The DVD conked off after warranty n no replacements forthcoming :P). With dell at least that problem is removed ;)

Dell outlet is the place where they put refurbished/laptops that were cancelled by the user after ordering. Some really good deals can be got there.

ya, already googled n checked :) Only refurb 13" avl. Not interested, too risky ;)

check all the options in dell outlet like inspiron 13, vostro 13, precision series, latitude

definitely "previously ordered configs" will be there.

check out the config and try to config a similarly speced config.

if worth it, go for it.

Thanks for the info man. Much appreciated.

Just realised the Inspiron 13 config I was eyeing will be almost 800$ after taxes n all.

Saw a Vostro 13 at the outlet for a sweet price though. 9 cell batt n all :D Might just pull the trigger on it, lets see.
