As the title says Iam not able to choose between engg and a career in vfx.
Iam currently in Manipal Intitute of Technology in ECE(EnC). But i am interested in animation and vfx. I have certificates of merit from cbse for being in the top 0.1% of the students in all the subjects. I didnt attempt IIT and AIEEE cos at that time I already decided not to go for engg. I wrote the entrance for mit only to watch avatar in imax 3d which was playing in the city of examination and i got a good rank:(. I dont know how but I was convinced to join here. I went through the first sem and came back home as i was not able to tolerate it. now i need to decide whether to go back again or not within today evening.
the only problem i need to address is:
i will not have a degree if i take up vfx.
Please help me in taking the right decision.

also does anyone know any vfx courses which offer a real degree?

No point doing 3D from India, and especially not as a Bachelor's.

Get a BTech (if possible) and then go for any masters/diploma like animation or engg or whatever as you want.

That will make your future more secure and more valuable.

And if you have done so well in CBSE and haven't given IIT etc, then go for Stephen's etc in DU, Eco hons and stuff. The best courses in the best colleges are really good, and better for higher education abroad compared to colleges like Manipal.

Dump engineering.

There is no point in doing something you do not love.

you love VFX and 3D modelling etc etc, then do something which will help you. May be some sort of animation degree( if there is one in place).

And do not listen to rite above, his EQ is still lingering in single digits.

Godspeed.

Do what you love. That said, but keep in mind that later in case you feel that vfx is not for you or there are other reasons which make you shift carrer, the degree will help you. My tskr : i will suggest you, to do enng only as a backup plan.

I am not saying you need to necessarily go for engg.

But either opt for the best college or for the best course, if not both.

The following are better options than Manipal engg.

Stephen's/SRCC Eco

Stephens Maths

Any Stephen Degree/CBS

Any Eco degree from Hindu, Hansraj top 5 DU colleges

Also, top law colleges, business colleges, any top college.

Basically, if you don't want to do engg, DU is one of the best choices available.

But if you are interested in doing 3D, going for these degrees is a waste. Engg is your best choice if 3D is your first choice. Or else, go for Bachlors in Computers or Animation abroad.

Canada is one of the better ones for Animation.

But don't pursue a bachelors from India in an average college and a third grade course (wrt India)

^^^^Hmm so what income bracket should the OT belong to, to consider the possibility of studying abroad according to you?

what's the big deal abt stephens--i have heard a lot about it- not in a very positive light - apparently rich brats end up there -- rite must be studying there i guess. You propose , we(TE) dispose!!

Sorry but

As for the thread, I'd say take some time and talk to your folks and friends/cousins who are elder to you. Also if possible talk to someone who is in the animation field to know about prospects and how the industry is like etc.

Take enough time before making your mind up. And yeah, I agree with others. Do what you love.

To make it more accurate,

don't wanna boast or anything but to get this straight:

1. I am 20, from DPS RKP where the average family income is like 25-50 lacs annual.

2. I am in SSCBS DU (Asia's No.2 Undergrad Business College, the first being NUS) studying BBS and the chance of selection here is approximately 1%. And here again there are many people who spend much more than I do.

3. I am the MD of a Pvt Ltd firm and my income(not my parent's income) has been close to 80-100k(before tax) for over a year now. Of course, I am fortunate to be at this position and am not trying to boast or show you down, but just to be frank.

From the background I belong, everybody goes for the best of everything. So when we are talking of colleges it is like:

DU Stepens Hindu Hansraj CBS Venky etc

IIT DCE Bits etc

Abroad Top 50-100 world colleges

Because all my friends/acquaintances parents are from the same background, good doctors, businessmen, top professionals, VPs, CEOs etc. So all of them want their children to reach the same level as well.

If you don't aspire to earn over a lac or so a month, you can follow any avg path and reach that stage. Of course a graduation and then hard work.

But for many people that isn't enough.

It is like 50k per month if a very good income for a driver's son. However, even 10 times the family income isn't enough for a rich businessman's son. So everything is relative.

If you can't go abroad:

1. If you want to do 3D, go for Engg.

2. If you are absolutely not interested in engg, go for DU but I am not sure whether you can go a 3D Masters after that. You may be able to do a diploma though.

thanks for your suggestions! But please stick to advice and not flaming because my career interestingly depends on your valuable advice.
@rite: mit is one of the best colleges in india being the leader in private colleges only after BITS and has an A++ grade along with BITS. Morover the discussion is not about whether my college is good or not but whether to continue engg or not. Only clarifying no offence intended.

:S:S:S

So what we are supposed to conclude...:S
That an MD cant even take care of his signature and goes against siggy rules :P

You Sir are a Moron.

Jeez... how do you get time to think shit like this man?

Get out of your bubble TechBoi( that's your name right?).Life is lot more than just money.

I am sure there are gazillion people out there who took an average path but did what they love doing. And trust me they are more successful than your upper income class family member, friends, servants, dogs, minions and whatever you boast of.

Do what you love most. I'll tell you about myself :P
I completed 2 years of Mech Engg. and then the light! B.Sc Degree in Animation. I dumped engg midway and switched coz I've always wanted to get into game dev/animation. I've completed the course got the degree and am working now. Doing what I love. Will be going for further studies abroad. And who told you there's no point in doing your bachelor's for animation here or wherever? Its a must that you do the basics right, coz the emphasis on the basics of animation is not very high when doing your masters in the same. I've seen my engg. friends suffer when they took up animation/vfx for masters..

for asia's number 2 college i have never ever heard of it

Lol I think he tried for engineering, but was not able to get through. Hence does what every rich kid does, ie an undergrad business degree, which have walk-in admissions provided you have the moolah (yeah I mean its not that difficult to get into that stream even at Stanford forget the so called second best college in Timbuktu). And TB stop spreading the built up income analysis which you keep posting on every second thread.
