71-90K Urgent! Confused between Ryzen 6600U vs. Core i5 1240P

Hi All,

Need advice on buying Asus laptop and primarily confused between the processors. I need advice on the processors to zero in and buy right away.

Its going to be used for my office work and some data crunching. No gaming plans. I want it to be future proof and hence buying the top notch specs.

I've listed both the laptops in comparison table.

Concerns-
- Is ryzen 6600U as fast as core i5 1240P? Ryzen has lesser cores.
- Is amd dependable as intel? I've always used intel laptops/desktops
- is it worth investing in amd vs intel?

Can't comment on the looker part, but Vivobook S14 has the same dimensions as
Zenbook 14 except in thickness, Vivobook is about 2-3mm thicker. In terms of weight, Vivobook is 100grams heavier.

If you're looking at thin/light/small laptop, then you shouldn't be considering Zenbook 14. It is considerably heavier and larger than last year's Zenbook 13 or this year's Zenbook S13.

I almost made up my mind to buy Zenbook 14 but didn't go ahead with the purchase because of it's bigger size. I wanted a 13 inch model and couldn't find anything in the market, so decided that when I'm going kinda large (14") why not buy 100grams heavier laptop which has much faster processor and is much cheaper.

You can also look at LG Gram 14 (2022). It is very light. A good 400 grams lighter than Zenbook 14.

Other good options are -
Samsung Galaxybook Pro 2
Dell Inspiron 13 5320
HP Pavilion Plus
All these models are 200-300-400 grams lighter and smaller in dimensions than Zenbook 14.

Can't stand the ugly and bulky Vivobook. I'm not asking for advice on other asus models.

I need info on these 2 only and their processors in particular.
 
-Core count is not everything. Technically the i5 has more cores but not all of its cores are the same. It has 4 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. The Ryzen 5 on the other hand has 6 Zen3+ cores all of which support SMT (their version of hyper threading). Comparing two CPUs made by different companies on a "core to core" basis doesn't work for a variety of reasons.

So 3 things go into determining the performance of a CPU:
-Core count (including support for SMT/hyper threading)
-IPC
-Clock speed (and how sustained they are in case of laptops)

When buying a laptop also take into account the TDP, which again is a bit complicated since Intel and AMD have different ways of measuring said TDP.
Now, Zen3+ cores have better IPC than 12th gen P cores. R5 6600U has a slightly higher clock speed than i5 1240. But the i5 has more total cores as you rightly pointed out. In synthetic benchmarks they trade blows with the ryzen edging out the intel by just a tiny margin overall which you shouldn't read into too much, as the scores depend on the benchmarking software and its ability to utilize the performance of the CPU in as much as the CPU's themselves.

So in conclusion: it doesn't matter. They both perform extremely comparably and you wouldn't know the difference for the most part. Focus on the other features of the laptops to make your decision.
That said, I'd personally proclaim the R5 6600U is better because it consumes a tiny bit less power compared to the intel and also performs much better in games if that's your thing.

-I'm not sure what you mean by dependable but both AMD and Intel have a comparable track record in the recent past. And arguably more security exploits have been discovered on intel CPUs than AMD.

-Again, I'm not sure what you mean here but don't give in to brand loyalty. It's a capitalist world, as a consumer be objective in your choices, you have the responsibility of making sure the best possible product prevails in the market.

And no, I don't have too much time on my hand. In fact, I'm supposed to be working on a paper right now. I'm just very good at procrastinating.

6600u is a much better processor than the 1240p
it's faster in both single and multi core and is quite a bit more power efficient (12th gen intel has power leakage issue and windows is currently really wonky with sleep states)

this is a performance comparison between the two
the 6600u also has a much faster iGPU with much more mature drivers so you'll have less issues if you ever want to do any gaming.
IMO it's a no brainer the 6600u is the superior chip.
 
I bought the Zenbook S 13 with 6600U and couldn't have been happier. It is lightweight (1.1 kg), thin (15 mm) and looks premium with titanium alloy finish. The hinge works well and the 2.8Kk OLED is marginally better than even my LG OLED TV! The performance is also good - I would strongly recommend it for its price. Samsung Galaxy Pro 2 is lighter but the display and build does not come close to Zenbook S 13.

AMD notebooks are more efficient so that means less heat and better battery. But the recent intel chips are catching up too. More so comparing the brand, you should look for other things in the package. Sound, Display (Color accuracy & brightness), Battery capacity, battery time, Keyboard and trackpad. And make a decision based on these parameters instead.

Congratulations on the purchase.

I also got the last generation Asus Zenbook 13. The one with i5-1137G7 with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM for 59k during Diwali.

It feels much lighter (1.1kg only), smaller and so much more handy as compared to Zenbook 14. The build quality is also very premium with no creaks or sounds anywhere even though this is so thin, small and light, ASUS didn't skimp on build quality.

I don't know why ASUS didn't release Zenbook 13 for Intel chips in 12th generation. Zenbook 13 feels considerably more portable than Zenbook 14 and IMO looks more premium too because of the small size.
