Hi,
Recently got a PC assembled.

E7200

ABit IP35 E

MSI NX8800 GT

Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD Writer.

Tanscend 2Gb*1 ddr2

Logitech MX518
Os : Windows Vista Ultimate.
The PC was working fine till yersterday. Got a copy of PC world, popped the DVD, installed a couple of appliactions like avg, avast, codecs pack, a demo game. After couple of restarts the drive stopped reading media.

Now the strangest part is that it only reads the Driver cd that came along with the motherboard and the graphic card driver cd. Its not reading anything else. Tried going into safe mode but the issue is still the same.
I tried using my audio cd's which worked with the drive but they are not responding as well.
1. Uninstalled and Reinstalled the DVD drive

2. Uninstalled all the applications.

3. Performed system restore

4. Performed BIOS Defaults.

5. Tried booting from a bootable Cd.. unable to do so.

6. The computer does boot up fine
And now the USB is not getting detected. No bangs in the device manager. The USB section is missing altogether
Tired different ports and different USB sticks. No power is comming to the USB device at all.
Unable to reinstall the OS as its not reading any bootable CD.
What needs to be done..

Help me please

a shattered soul :(

Dont panic ..

I beleive there is some problem in Mobo...

Usually after assembling a new PC within a week you get most of the pro0blems if any...

otherwise only external things can affect you ...

get it checked with your vendor..

^^ I don't think so. Most probably your optical drive is malfuncationing, may be a weaker/defective lens.

Ask for the optical drive replacement.

I would agre that i's a motherboard problem, since the USB ports are being affected too. I had to send my evga 680i back for defective usb ports when I first got it.

Dont hurry mate, i can understand ur panic though, the likely culprit is the drive, so get someone elses drive if pssble and do a reinstall and check first before u send away ur mobo.

I have no idea about what happened but the USB ports are working fine now.

The issue with the drive is still persisting. Its just reading 3 disk, namely Motherboard, Graphics and My Kodak camera software disk.

By reading I mean i can traverse/Browse through the contents and install then as well. but its just showing the lables for the other disk and i am unable to read those disks :@.

Should i upgrade the firmware for the drive: The Driver is Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD Writer.

Waiting for updates

Did you try re-installing OS as suggested above ? How do you know that no bootable CD is getting detected? Just set the CD Drive to 1st boot priority, and see if the Windows installer loads. Then reinstall and check if you have the same problems.

Otherwise, its a dysfunctional mobo /drive.

Reinstall the OS to confirm. If you still get the issue, try the ROM on some other PC. Then decide whether to RMA the drive or the mobo :)

reinstall OS dUde....get a friends drive n do it....don't panic....also try updating the firmware of the drive....

re-installing the OS seems a little severe for this issue, I don't think it will do much, this definitely seems to be a hardware issue. I would also agree change the cables and see if the cables are defective...upgrade the BIOS to the latest version, go to the DVD manufacturers web site and make sure you have the latest drivers for your OS. Make sure you have the DVD pins set to the correct place ie.. master, slave, cable select.

Tried upgrading the firmware for the drive, found out that it was the latest one. but then again flashed it and the issue persisted. Couldn't check with a different cable. As for the pin ststus that the DVD drive is a SATA so don't know if they still have the master and the slave settings I thought might be an issue with the user account so checked the same in the administrator acount, then again same issue.

Hence tried upgrading the bios using the flash utility provided in the CD, but during flashing the screen stuck at writing main program at 7% for more than 1/2 an hour. I restarted the computer and Got the BIOS CHEKSUM ERROR something about insert disk A
There is no floppy drive on my computer and hence I am unable to flash the bios.
Whats the next step.. I am supposed to get a new bios chip as the one shown here Universal abit USA Corporation or RMA the motherboard. Has the above step has voided my warranty.
I had mailed the issue that i am facing to Abit technical support and they also adviced me to upgrade the firmware.
The mail recieved from Abit Tech Support
