I am planning to get me a 2tb drive only for backing up and storing data TODAY. Kindly recommend the most reliable 2 tb drive.

Using a bunch of Seagate 2TB 7200.12 LP drives and a WD Caviar Green 2TB EARS. 3 serve as backup drives. I'd recommend the Seagate drives going by their replacement policy. WD sometimes takes an indefinitely long time for replacements!

PS: dvdstoredelhi has the drive. Do enquire the pricing in Amdavad if it is cheaper though!

Its Rs.4150 here from my dealer for the seagate 2 tb drive and Rs.4250 for WD green.

^Do you have any prior experience using WD's RMA service? It took me close to more than a month for replacing my netbook's 500GB drive. I gave up on WD ever since that incident.

RMA'ed a couple of wd drives before -- it took me a week for one drive and 10 days for another. Both were WD Blue drives. So you reckon the seagate 2tb drives are more reliable?

Pretty subjective I'd say - none of the Seagate drives have failed on me yet (one of the drives that shipped recently was DOA, was making a click-noise, had to send it back to the dealer). Whereas the 500GB WD netbook drive failed once. HD Tune never showed an error in the stats or a bad sector and yet the drive was being shown as defective in uTorrent (data redundancy error IIRC). RMA'd it.

Well IMO, no drives are that reliable, they can dump us any moment, so you can select either seagate or WD.

About WD RMA, i read that they take ages to replace faulty drive, but in my case they replaced mine in just a week time. So here again you luck scores.

there's the option of going for a 2tb hitachi drive @ Rs.4000 but I've owned 2 hitachi drives earlier and both failed me and the rma process was tedious. I'd rather play it safe and go for the seagate drive.

Hitachi have been taken over. Now there are only 2 reputed player seagate and wd.

Are you looking to buy a 5900RPM or 7200RPM drive?

seagate's 5900RPM 2TB LP drive should cost 4150/- + Taxes

but no idea about the 7200RPM one as i am on the lookout for the same, but not many do have it

about Seagate vs WesternDigital

go with your own experience and proximity to service centers

Me in same boat.

any 7200 rpm drive from seaget.?

bored of wd.in two yrs, I bought one laptop sized 500 gb drive.went for RMA twice.

One my book 1 tv drive.running at snails pace.I am getting 4 5 MBPS over e sata. And making grunting noise.

So I filed RMA request, it says it will come to pick up by 3rd july.their. phones dont work.

Third is working so far. But want to purchase a 2 tb and back up everything.

No more wd for me.

I was thinking of hitachi as well.it makes great drives.

Where do we source them?

There's the Barracuda XT 2TB. A bit hard to source though and expensive, a quick search on eBay shows the cheapest price is 10k.

If your only purpose is backup, then the 2TB Seagate Green ST2000DL003 is good enough.

I've seen the Hitachi on theitdepot.com site. Not sure how good support is.

great Eddy boss,

I will try to source a hitachi drive from primeabgb or alike.

if not then great united states of america.

friends mom is coming in month or so.

which one you will choose out of hitachi or seaget for data backups only.

only thing is , it should not be slow while copying data.

my experience with WD green is nothing good.

I am currently using their latest WD10EARS but of no use.

Amazon.com: Hitachi Deskstar 3.5-Inch 2 TB Internal Hard Drive (0S02861): Electronics

what you say?

currently I am using their 2.5 inch 7200 rpm 500 GB drive for my vaio.

its amazingly fast and i dont feel its giving any extra heat on my vaio.Touch wood.

it replaced 200 GB 4000 rpm toshiba drive which came with vaio.

I will choose the one with better support, i.e. Seagate.

Plus shipping/handling is what causes most drives to end up DOA, so I'd avoid having someone bring me a drive halfway around the world.

I myself have a 2 TB WD Green and i was thinking of getting another one of it , but the 5900RPM Seagate Drive also looks good , my use is for secondary storage , a little difference in speed is no problem when you are getting it cheaper than conventional 7200 RPM drives :D ..
