CPU/Mobo Urgent query!!!!

Sorry this maybe OT to the mobo section but didn't know where else to post...

My A8N SLI Premium mobo has died (sent the entire rig back home a little while back), and one of my older mobos has also died. While the SLI one can be RMA'ed so no issues.

The query is - could a bad earthing be a cause? at home everything is good, but where I stay in navi mumbai, I get slight shocks from the cabby also, suggesting a reverse flow of earthing. What could I do to solve this?? Pls do help as I am also planning on a C2D and P5WDH combo pretty soon, and wouldn't like this to happen to that rig....

Is there anything that I can do, and what components stand a chance of getting damaged?
 
Just get your eathing fixed asap. I have wasted a couple of mobo's in a similar scenario. Also screwed up my power supplies.

I'd also suggest you wisely "invest" in a voltage stabiliser and/or a UPS.

arre baba the problem is I have an 800VA UPS from numeric... even my lappy conducts this current...

Yeees, its bad earthing and you getter get it checked immediately. Infact you should be having problems with the UPS too.
 
If you're using one of those power strip thingies, they'll tell you at once if your earth connection is bad. I'll say they are good for that although I never do trust their so-called spike guarding capability.
 
that shock from the cabinet is a tell tale sign of bad earthing...If you have a DMM, just check by connecting one terminal to the Earth pin and the other to any metallic object ....even a regular voltage tester (the screwdriver thingie with a light in it) will also do the trick

unfortunately no...its just the UPS that I'm using. Am going to talk to the house owner immediately (tonight) about getting it fixed and he ain't getting no friggin rent till its done....

Can I run my lappy? And speakers are running too (mx 5021) any chance of damage here?

Once the electrician is done repairing, will I be able to use the tester thing to test for current? or should I get a spike guard? which brand - microtek or something better? I have no clue of spike guard brands..
 
I suggest refrain from using any electrical items like laptop, speakers, refrigrator, AC's till this is fixed. Else be ready for lots of RMA's. The best thing would be to get this thing fixed with a week or two and than start using all your electrical components.
You should be thankful to god this didnt result in to a major incident.

yeah...I'm only just realising. Thankfully this is a rented place. My home (sweet home) in Jabalpur has perfect earthing... thanks to me spending time with a couple of electricians. All the powerpoints on our second floor have dedicated earthing... anyways me with nothing to run for at least 3 days :(

don't anyone dare laugh :(
 
hmm..actually you can still use the laptop...just make sure you use a two pronged plug...Most laptop power supplies are happy with a two pronged (Live & Nneutral ) connector

oh fukk no.... my lappy has a 3 pin.... Its not great yaar... an older compaq, a 2004 model, pentium M with 512 MB (infact it was one of the few 512 mb models available). I just use it for completing office assignments, notes etc....

And I've disconnected everything... btw can I use my nokia chargers on these plug points? or else I'll have to charge my cell phones from office.

yup as long as the mobile charger has a 2 pin plug
 
No problemos, just get one of those multi-connectors for 20 bux, remove the earth prong by unscrewing it, plug your 3 prong laptop power cable into it and plug that castrated connctor into your UPS, and you are gold...

Update the electrician is to come today evening... I used a tester found that the live wire is 'live' even after the switch is put off. And its only with this plugpoint... Now the earth isn't showing a charge (using the tester), so what else could the problem be.

Actually I won't be there to meet the electrician or talk to him, me in office late today, but my roomy will be there. I'll update further. The Asus SLI mobo has been given for replacement, while my older P4 system is dead now without a mobo. Rest of the components are working fine, one of our hardware guys in office checked them out.
