The external hdd 80 gb is basically a toshiba laptop hdd in a casing. It suddenly stopped working out of the blue. Its not getting detected in windows anymore. The light comes on but it doesnt seem like the hdd is rotating as its not making any noise. I opened up the casing there is no loose connection. Can anybody help? i also need to recover the data its my brother in laws..................
 
i would ask you to try it on a different pc or atleast a different os first.

or go into device manager & unistall the usb drivers & reboot.

did you post before somedays about some problem with your os ? if yes then what was the org problem.

I had a similar problem with my 2.5" Seagate 20GB drive a couple of months back - would not get recognised at all. I did not know if it was the casing or the drive which had gone bad. I then saw the USB2IDE cables at Lamington road and picked up 2 different brands and the drive has been working absolutely fine with one of the cables.

A friends Toshiba 850mb notebook drive in his Toshiba notebook died about 2 years back and I got it replaced at Lamington road - I kept the DEAD drive and recently I attached it to the USB2IDE cable and VOILA it works fine !!

Go Figure !!

The 3.5" USB2IDE cable cost me 450/- and the 2.5"/3.5" drives cable cost me 600/-. The advantage of these cables is that I can attach HDDs or optical drives.
 
try changing the casing...i was using a cheapo rs250 wala casing for my laptop hdd before which used a single usb port n i often had detection probs....write failed errors...etc..after i chnged to a transcend casing which draws twice the power from the usb port all these probs stopped

@ eazy tried diff cables dint work
@apolly gona try the casing change ....wats it gonna cost me?..... any idea?

I am not talking about just a cable I am talking about this.....

I paid 650/- for it. Bill scanned.....



You can bring that drive to me if you want - but I am bed ridden with a leg problem - so my life is topsy turvy at the moment - a good time to come over is around 12 noon. PM me and I will give you my address - I am at Churchgate near the KC/HR colleges.
 
@ eazy went to comp selc changed the case dint work tried with another dint work
@ pc guide the cable was for 550 now. Dint work the hdd's not getting power not a vibration or rotation. Think the power module is gone. Sent for data recovery through dad lets see wat comes up :)
