Value of MS in India

Hey guys I have completed my Bsc IT this year and I am planning to do MS from USA.I would like to know value of MS in India.Does a MS graduate from USA gets paid more than its counterpart in India.

I have heard from some people that MS people here in India are considered over-qualified and hence dont get job easily over here and even if they bag a job,pay is similar to a B.E/B.Tech graduate.

How true is above statement??

Is it worth doing MS if one does not plan to settle over in USA?
 
MS is useful only if you want to work in USA. Also MS is not over qualified, rather the other way around. Often people who do MS start expecting high salaries that are on par with US salaries. An MS fresher is no different than a B.Tech/BE/MCA fresher in terms of their work capabilities and companies expect to pay on similar terms. If you go and ask them to pay the equivalent of USD 6~7k in Rupees every month because you have an MS from US, the HR, instead of saying that you are under qualified for pay scales, would tactfully reject you saying that you are over qualified for the Job.

That said, the part about not getting jobs easily India is also applicable only for people who start expecting to be paid on par with typical US salaries. That's simply not going to happen. As long as your exceptions are reasonable, you will get a job. One should be prepared with a good answer for the question "Why are you in India after doing MS from USA". because that is definitely going to be asked.

In most cases, the MS would be treated to be on par with B.Tech/BE/MCA and you would be paid on similar terms. Many would just ignore the MS and look at the under grad degree only. Do note that the typical MS that most people go for is a science degree rather than an Engg degree.
 
Well, I don't agree with him.

A MS from a top 30-50 US college will give you a heavy package when you land here. But it has to be a good college. Also, you need to do MSc or BE before going for MS from USA.

Basically, a top 30-40 MS is better than an average IIT BTech.
 
@rite what are the colleges?? is thr ne particular site whr we come to know abt rank of colleges for MS??

These are some of the better ones.

Some of the passable ones are:

Illinois

Florida

Ohio

etc

Check rankings online.

Those that make it to top 50 in 3 or more rankings are safe bets.
 
thats what happening from couple of days.One says says in favor of MS while other person says against it.

You mean to say if one plans to come back to India it does not makes sense to do MS.Better one do some course from India itself or get a MBA degree.

Rite, what type of organizations in India hire individuals which return from abroad, with an MS --- alma mater being the top colleges you listed. Also what type of package is "heavy"...? What are the work profiles they are mapped too..? Are they R&D/managerial/or something else which utilizes the skill set. Are they hired on functional criterion or purely knowledge, based on theory and practicals they underwent as an MS discipline..? Theoretically and hypothetically assuming, that they completed they classical Indian graduation (engineering or a Bachelors in Science), how much weightage does this carry along with the tuition and classes and credit points they accumulated abroad..?

You will basically get Managerial level posts in Engg/Management depts of top MNCs like Microsoft, Yahoo, Adobe, Facebook etc.

Both R&D, Marketing and otherwise.

Package could start nearing 1 L per month CTC to 3-4L PM CTC for 0 years experience depending on your college and profile (CMU will probably bag around 1 L, Harvard or MIT may bag 2-4 L if you are a topper there).

And no IIT or IIM grad, or at least not 99.9% of those grads can demand 2-3+ L packages with 0 experience. Very few can. And you will come with those very few if you manage to crack into Harvard or MIT. Other good colleges will make you at par with other MSc or BE+ME from IIT Delhi and the like. You get the same role as they would get.

Weird. How can they get managerial level jobs, when they know nothing about management. An MS does not teach that..? Or does it..? And these would be levels like VP/Senior VP or probably a high profile AVP. With a standard span of 100-250 people below them. Does not make sense to me.

You get things like Team Leader for Engg and such managerial level jobs. That is what my mamu got, though he is just a Florida MS but has exp. Although his package is 44L.

Which equates to Manager/Senior Manager. Has to be high profile to garner such high packages.........! And that too 0.00 years of work experiences. Sounds like a fairy-tale.

I definitely don't support what he is saying. A B.Tech from the IITs is top grade stuff, not just in India, but across the world. Never mind where the college ranks in the world, but the quality of these guys is no less than the best. A masters from IIT is a different story, and I wouldn't get into that.

Coming to MS guys from US getting those packages that rite is talking about, to be honest, I haven't seen a top grade MS (Stanford et al) coming to India after completing their course. Those who I have seen return are MS from the lesser colleges, but then they also had work ex when they joined here. I have seen 7 - 9 year exp with MS getting 25 - 30 LPA, which is something a CSE B.Tech from IITs can easily garner with a similar experience.

respect? for who? IITians? Should be because that's comparing a BTECH with MS.

If you are able to bag a job or two in the US then you should land yourself a decent deal here too. Even if you don't then you'll atleast be on par with a BE/Btech (Non IIT) with 2 years of exp.
I have a couple of friends who returned to India after their MS, they're doing pretty decently but yes, they would have done better in the US.

@OP dude are you from IIT? if not then I request posters here to not bring IITs into the picture for this thread.
 
A BTech from IIT just gets 40-50k avg in USA compared to their avg for decent grads from decent colleges being 60-70k+ from within USA colleges.

But that is besides the point.

If you get a top 30-40 MS, then it is just below the Stanford category.

1. People from MIT etc don't come back and hence are in short supply and can charge whatever they want if they plan to come back.

2. People who are in tier 2 colleges will get a comparable package to a BTech from IIT (but Top 15-20%ile) with 0 work exp. Yes, it will be comparing a MS to IIT BE and not their BE to IIT BE. But if you didn't get a IIT BE, then the MS will get you the same respect and package.

3. Tier 3 or lower colleges will find it hard to get a job in India, and even if they do, it will be less than 50k pm. Tier 3 means colleges which aren't in top 40-50 in USA.

I'm not sure I thought MS gets you an avg. package of 45-50K in the US? you're saying a grad gets 60- 70k ? You are probably talking about only the top universities.

I was being sarcastic. If you read my earlier post, it clearly states that IITian B.Techs are of superior grade.
