25K+ Verizon iPhone 5S for $550 from US

Im looking to buy an iphone 5s from US to use in India (Vodafone)
Price is $199 and you can pay a $350 early termination fee . so $549 in all
This is $100 less than the price of unlocked phone

Question is will it work without any issues in India ?
I read somewhere that we need to activate and upgrade the baseband using verizon SIM first for iphone 5.
Not sure what that means.

Also how much taxes would i have to pay for the phone in say New York ?

I don't think you can just take It for 199$ and straightaway pay early Termination fee. You probably will have to pay for the plan for one month at least and yes taxes as well.
I feel this is too much hassle and it is better to buy either from eBay or buy unlocked.

So take this rough calculation..

199$ for the handset on contract
17$ for the tax (approx if charged on 199$ price and this goes to 60$ if charged on full price of the phone, some states do this, NY does not probably)
35$ activation fee
60$ for plan for the first month
350$ early termination fee

600+ $ for going through this mess. You seriously want to do this ?
Rather buy a GSM unlocked and have peace of mind. Don't go for saving few dollars and worry about all this, better buy unlocked from AT&T or tell your friend to shop at local or online apple store.
