Guys,

I am presently using 2mbps UL yearly for Rs.4000/- ( DL speed : 230 kBps to 255kBps) ISP - Genstar...

I just saw plans of MTNL triband, but wanted to know the contention ratio for those. Called up several CC numbers, but all of them were Ladies and no one had ever heard word contention. They gave me some numbers but didnt get any answer.

I am inclined towards DSL_UL_395 plan ONLY if I get download speed of 384kbps during day and 512kbps at night.

MTNL Triband users, please let me know which plan you use and what download speeds you get.

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Chirag

err ^o why change your existing ISP?

you are having the best ISP in your area better than MTNL.

you are getting speeds of 235KB/sec and with MTNL you might get speeds of about 384 kb/sec

Contention ratio??? If MTNL's UL 395 provides me 512kbps download speed then I may look for it coz it costs just 300rs more annually.

Are you sure that for downloading I will get 384kbps?? Or does it get divided ??

With MTNL plan 384kbps during day - I'm getting 42/48 kbps in day time- and 512kbps at night - I'm getting up to 64kbps. Better stick with your existing ISP :)

i still dont get it .

why do you want to downgrade your internet conection.

your current ISP gives you 2mbps connection(235KB/sec) @ 4K yearly whereas MTNL will give your 384kbps connection (around 50KB/sec or less) by paying a little more to your current isp :S

Bro, thats what I wanted to know whether MTNL gives 384kbps as said or it has contention. Emperors' post has given me that idea and I am sticking with my ISP now :P

-edit-

I feel stupid tying this entire post before checking your plan correctly.

If you are getting "2mbps UL yearly for Rs.4000/-" then MTNL is not an alternative for you.

I thought the 4K was a monthly charge.

Although, based on your other posts, you and Emperor have absolutely no idea about the difference between kbps(telecom terminology) and kBps(PC terminology). ggt has got it absolutely right in his first post.

-original post , ignore this-

I am unable to get the latest data as they have changed the layout of the tariff page.

Found some earlier data here.

MTNL Broadband triband Tariff

Sl Month Contention Ratio

1 October 2010 1:12

2 November 2010 1:12

3 December 2010 1:11

I am on the DSL_Unlimited_999 plan. Total monthly charges come to around 1250 including the minimum line rental of 150Rs and adding taxes.

The speed rarely goes below the advertised numbers. Last time it had affected me when they had temporarily doubled the speeds on weekends as some promotion. If your telephone line connection till their exchange is good then you need not worry about speeds going below your plan.

The service is perfect as long as it works. In case a problem occurs you are almost always stuck on your own as their CC is pretty dumb. You'll get lots of help online though.

Pings to gaming servers are good too. I play TF2 on SG servers with around 90 ish ping. Battlefield:BC2 gives me around 75 ping to an SG server. A few UK servers are around 150-200 mark as well.

Their is a huge price difference between these two plans

DSL_Unlimited_1599 upto 1.344 Mbps 1.792 Mbps Rs 1599

DSL_Unlimited_4999 upto 2 Mbps upto 2 Mbps Rs 4999

Add 150 as rental and additional taxes and you have your monthly bill.

Unlimited Plans

Also refer this post if you need to have a detailed info about some of the plans they offer. Unfortunately I have not included the above two plans and MTNL has updated their plan rates, BW, and night unlimited times once after that. I'd suggest you go with DSL_Unlimited_1599 and switch a month later if you are not satisfied.

^^ I get as low as 160 to 180 pings to UK servers in BF3 and 30 to 35 to Indian servers...So pings aren't an issue for me.. The contention ratio is what matters for me on that advertised speed. So I can now say that my present ISP plans are better compared to MTNL plans

I do have enough knowledge about this terminology mate... :)

Let me know if Genstar is available here in Ghatkopar. Someone told me it is. Will do a shift next year maybe. CC numbers would be helpful.

I do have enough knowledge about this terminology mate... :) Infact its KBps and kbps

if you are interested in online gaming i would suggest you to check if reliance broadband is available in your area.

they are known to have better pings overall.

My current ISP has good pings, so for online gaming I dont have any problem.. But just wanted to increase my DL speed, so though about MTNL, but it seems presently I am getting much better service.

Yes, we have Reliance broadband in our area too, but tis costly, almost similar to what MTNL is giving in terms of download speeds... Pings might be better, I don't have have an idea regarding its pings.

Yes, the Main office of Genstar is at Ghatkopar :) Check with your cable operator for the same. We have a Hub called Gamezone running, people from Ghatkopar,Vikhroli,Kanjurmarg and Powai can join this Hub only if subscribed to Internet service from Genstar called as Speednet. I know a person named Sikander from Genstar, I will PM you his number.

But IMO, Ghatkopar west has got Fivenet which is much better in terms of DC hub... Has got highest sharing atleast in Central Mumbai with some insane net speeds.

Hey dude, could you plz also pm me the contact details of the person at Genstar? Considering alternatives for my Fivenet connection which expires end of this month!

No they have 2mbps maximum, I could have spent 500rs to 600rs per month for 4mbps UL ...But they dont have it...

^^ in that case why not ask your ISP of any upgrade in plans?

i am sure they might have this as an option

from your first post.

I am presently using 2mbps UL yearly for Rs.4000/- ( DL speed : 230 kbps to 255kbps) ISP - Genstar...

Although I understand what you mean by this, it should be written as "230 kBps to 255kBps" to avoid confusion. Same mistake is repeated by Emperor. Such posts are misleading and can confuse others.

Also, this division by 8 has nothing to do with the contention ratio, if you are relating the two together.

OTOH, I have never seen plan rates like yours in my area, even from the local cable operators. Unable to find any tariff related info about Genstar online. Contacting them to see whether they provide service in my locality.

Sorry if it is misleading, I will edit the same

MRP of that plan is Rs.2500/- and cable operators union make it costly... They charge Rs.5500/- for this. But after a lot of debate with my Cable operator I have made him agree at 4K. Even some of my friends in my area use it for same price. Rest who arent aware of MRP pay 5.5K or even 6K at times for this plan.

The reason why i prefer this over 5net is that the local operator for 5net asked me roughly 9K for the same connection which i have with my current ISP (6k, 1Mbps UL). DC would be a big plus point but for the money that they are asking, i am in no way interested. The only thing which my current ISP will lose is my sharing on DC.

You can become a Share King on Gamezone too :P I was till August 2011. From then I have never connected back to DC. Most of them desperate people, you would know better ;) BTW Thanks

Well, just spoke to Sikander from Genstar and unfortunately they do not service Ghatkopar (East)!

Any reviews about WorldNet ?
