Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray was arrested at Ratnagiri in the wee hours of Tuesday for Sunday's brutal attack on north Indian railway exam candidates by MNS workers.

A case was registered in this connection against Raj Thackeray and his supporters at the north-west Mumbai police station of Kherwadi, after MNS workers attacked 13 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai to protest against "inadequate representation" to locals.

Thackeray, who was on tour in western Maharashtra and Konkan region, was arrested from Ratnagiri district and is likely to be produced in Bandra court in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The arrest of the MNS chief comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure on the Maharashtra government to rein in Thackeray and his activists.

Earlier, a combative Raj Thackeray had justified Sunday's attack on north Indians and warned the state that it will have to "regret" the consequences in the event of his arrest.

"Arrest me and be ready to bear the consequences.... You will have to regret," Raj Thackeray, who was attending a ceremony at Bahadursheikh Naka in Chiplun in the state on Monday, said.

"If Raj is arrested, entire Maharashtra will be set on fire," he threatened.

Meanwhile, incidents of violence were reported across Mumbai allegedly by the MNS activists.

Taxis parked at Tardeo in south Mumbai were damaged by some unknown miscreants who fled on motorcycles, the police said.

Two separate incidents were reported in the north-west suburb of Borivali where miscreants attempted to burn trucks, they added.

Miscreants attacked a toll booth located in the north-west suburb of Mulund and set one of the counters on fire, the police said.

There were also reports of some unidentified men throwing stones at the suburban resident of Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam.

Meanwhile, schools in suburban Mumbai have been closed as a preventive measure following the arrest of MNS chief.

Bsides, security has been beefed up in Mumbai to thwart any untoward incident, the police said.

Reacting sharply to his leader's arrest, MNS spokesperson Shirish Parkar said, "There was no substance in the allegations against Raj Thackeray. The state government was acting at the behest of the Centre."

Parkar described the arrest of Raj Thackeray as "vengeance" and political "conspiracy" by the Maharashtra government.

Everything's moving on as usual. No holiday for me :( The police had arrested almost 500 mns activists yesterday, so there aren't many left to protest :)

i think everyone should keep a bat with them, and wen they see an mns worker, start banging him..that should sort them out..

Why dont they delist the MNS from elections...no one will support them....All in order to become hero...masiha type are with them.....and by just throwing stones want to win election tickets.....

They are angry that north indians take their job...but the truth is no Marathi person is ready or want to drive taxi, auto or do milk men type duty....

I Have workers in my shop from up-Bihar who for 10rs carry 100kg stuff alon for 100-200metres....Are their any Marathi person willing to commit that much....

ITs just fooling people...Bal thackeray when played this card it was mill generation, trade unions and all where it was affecting...but now an ordinary marathi knows he can earn decently by working in mall or call centre even if he is not well educated......

Raj is getting the mileage only for the surname thackeray attach to it.......else earlier only the police would had taken action....Congress for cutting SS votes supporting this thackeray as it will cut BJP -other thackeray shares of votes...and ultimately in future if u see MNS supporting congress dont b surprise(will b courtesy narayan rane)...

One thing I noticed on the way to work, traffic has decreased a hundred fold, when it normally takes a painful 1 hr of journey took just a breezy 15 mins today :) hehe keep arresting raj if this is the case ;)

I guess we shouldnt be stereotype marathis here. Most of the mobs following any political party is just a violent group of crazy jobless people who would get some financial reward and a sense of importance by carrying the flags of these parties.

I guess Maharashtra & Mumbai especially is better off without any political parties like these and would progress much better if they are banned.

I'd say ban the damn party and put the law breaker in the slammer just to show that no one can hold a state to ransom by threatening with violence.

This is what laloo said 'Arresting is just not enough, MNS should be banned.'

+1 to that. And whoever indulged in the beating up of students should be imprisoned for life, so that they do not resort to such meaningless violence again :@

Competition brings the best in u...

Y fear then... ??

If the marathis think the jobs r their right den get it the legal way... i.e. write n clear the exams or what ever that is!!!

Exactly! The only reason Mumbai is such a bustling metro is because of the competitiveness induced by all the hard working people, be they from the north south or within Maharashtra itself. If lazy folks expect returns for doing nothing, they will take us back to the stone age.

"If Raj is arrested, entire Maharashtra will be set on fire," he threatened.

This is a textbook definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face

You are wrong if you think that this guy is fighting for the rights of the Marathi people. He doesn't give a damn about what happens to the state. That's quite evident from his threats about burning down Maharashtra. Its quite evident that he is a terrorist and an enemy of nation. I am surprised that he is being treated as one.

Well the article in question itself was removed (or was a fake) so i moved the thread to trash. We can keep the discussion to this thread right ? The deletion notification hack has been disabled iirc.

I say, shoot the bastard... sorry if this sound too shrewd, but the man is openly challenging law by saying, "arrest me and get ready for consequences".

These so-called "consequences" means riots, bandhs and more street violence... ultimately affecting majorly to us, the regular working-class people. Where does one get such a dare to make statement like this? What makes one think that he can bend the law at his will?

What the **** has he done so far that has actually been even remotely beneficial to common man? As far as I have seen him coming in limelight from his Shivsena days, I don't remember anything but provocative speeches and violence. I say again... shoot the bastard. When a dog go mad, it's best to kill it.
