Hey guys,

About 1 week back I reinstalled my PC with win XP from fedora. I installed all the necessary softwares and everything was fine until 2 days ago. I kept a file to download from torrent and when I woke up in the morning I shut down my PC and later when I switched on my PC then the problem started. I can't use my net as it does't allow, when I click on my firewall it doesn't show anything. I can't use any of the administrative things, it won't even allow me to change the date of the computer. media files are also not working. Everything just gets freezed/hang.

I have avast home edition anti-virus and Jetico firewall, but i guess even the firewall is not working. Something big has happened to my registry files.

My pc config is-- > P4 2.8 HT, 512 mb ram, 80 gb HDD, win XP SP2.
I tried reinstalling also but it won't work.

Please give me some solution to it. Thanks.

Best Regards.

^ Why do you think it is a software problem ? It could be a hardware problem, possibly a hard disk going kaput (personal experience), so just put it as slave on some other comp and back up the data first.

Reinstalling XP if it was a virus problem should have taken care of it. Thats why I feel it could be something wrong with the HDD. Just use seatools / other diagnostics software, make a boot floppy / CD and check your hard drive to make sure everything is OK.

Hope that helps,

~M

U can also try going to the safe mode and then trying to install a good Security suite like Norton 2009 or something which would catch anything it et all it exists...:)

I have the feeling that its a virus for sure as it won't even allow me to reinstall/uninstall anything.

Yes, I already did. When i scanned my PC in normal mode it didn't detect anything but when I scanned in safe mode it detected couple of viruses. I deleted it though but still the problem persists.

Hmm do msconfig check if they are some startup items that are not right and remove the bad ones and also do a boot time scan using avast this should do the trick...

HEY buddy,
its a virus newly released on net.trust me.i have already been infected with it once.if u cant see the internet configuration icon(local area connection icon) on network places then it is that virus.i can't remember the name just now.Do a few things,
1. connect your HDD with another machine which has a 2008 version of Kaspersky antivirus(NOT 2009 VERSION COS IT HANGS AT THE END).
2. Do a scan of all the drives of your HDD.Let it find all the infected files.
3. After the scan is finished delete all the infected files. No other way.
4. After this is done re-install XP and everything else. But install Avast before connecting to internet.
Follow these steps and u will be home free.:)
If problem still remains which i think should not then there may be a problem with your HDD.

Just like you said I checked out the msconfig and found something weird on my first glance itself. It was named "nvcp.exe" and "nvcp.dll". I unchecked it and restarted my machine but still the problem persists. Then I went to the source folder which was in 'system 32' so deleted the file then everything was working fine. The thing is after every restart that nvcp keeps poping up in my msconfig so I don't think its completely removed. I will update here if something comes up.

So far so good everything is running smoothly like before, I have installed Comodo Internet Security and updated it so lets hope everything will be fine.

Thanks to everyone who helped me. :hap2: Cheers. :)

I can't delete partition cause there is too much data in my HDD. I fixed the virus problem now by deleting it. Now comodo is installed and it is taking care of my PC. :)

also try using avast antivirus..it does a neat job
Yes, I was using that. It detected the virus in some other folder but the actual virus was in system 32. Anyway, I uninstalled avast and I have kept comodo now. Its really awesome.

hmmm...
are you formatting all your drives while re-installing?
if you are comfortable with Linux, use a live CD to backup data on an external, then do a clean install of XP, formatting all the hard drives. On first load, disconnect the LAN cable, then set up the firewalls/AV software.
The problem is not from the torrent download.

Always keep a rescue cd like kaspersky rescue disc or the bitdefender rescue cd. The bitdefender rescue disc supports internet definition updates.
