Guys i just ordered a VisionTek HD4870 for a friend frm KMD .. wondering if a Corsair vx450W PSU will be enough for it ... ??

And what is Visiontek's reputation as a brand ??

looking at the config u have in sig, if you dint have any problems running the 3870, the 4850 shouldn't give u any problems either, power wise both cards are very similar. And corsair's usually underrate their psu's.

AnandTech: The Radeon HD 4850 & 4870: AMD Wins at $199 and $299

^^^depends on the other components of the rig....but I dont think so it will be enuf....though it will power up the rig but look out for frequent restarts/artificats/lockups etc....

Yep thats why I said if the rig in sig, is in question, thats what I meant, 3870 and 4850 are pretty close in power consumption. And relistically Corsair's 450w should be enough!

3870 load - 212W

4850 load - 227W

4870 load - 278W

EDIT: I thought he was talking about a 4850, its the 4870, now I'm thinking, it will be dicey!

I just went through the minimum requirements on egg, its 500W psu, and as I said Corsair 450W would prolly be underrated, however, having said that he does have a overclocked dual core, so it might be a hit or miss.

@op: Only you would be able to tell after some usage, as banik said lockups restart without overclocking your card would mean its running short, but I think you should make it unless u heavily overclock ur card!

33A on the 12V rail should be fine to power even a quad with a HD 4870. Even moderate OC on the quad is fine as long as the HD 4870 is nt subjected to more voltages :P

Runs fine on my coolermaster realpower 550W :)

Easily; :D

But I dont think the VX450 comes with 2 6pin connectors; u should be able to connect it using the converter; :D

@supra: reply to my age-old PM re; :(

4870 at peak load consumes 156W. Even with most high end system, total system power won't exceed 300W..Further, 12V rail on 33A would have enough juice to run any card - 12V x 33A = 396W alone.
I believe, VX450 Would be more than enough for 4870..:)

Its running rig in ma siggy fine, fan doesnt accellerate @ load, which means I m not even stressing to 80% of its capability.

The graph shown on the back of the box is a noise level graph. According to this, the fan does not spin up until the PSU is loaded above 80%.

SidhuPunjab, from ur rig it seems that the HD4870 shud run well on a vx450W ..

BTW any other PSU one step up the vx450W, like vx550W or Real Power 550W .. how much will they cost ?

yea fine

VX550, HX520 r not avl in India. Next sweetspot is Corsair TX 650W @ 6k approx.

arey X-rebel bhai, don't worry, VX450 will be more than enough for 4870. already calculated in post #8..:)

Muzux, that is pure calculation ... doesnt efficiency come in place ??

Else the CM 600W, which has 36A on 12V tail, shud be providing 432W but it hardly provides 350W ... while as per Bikey, the vx450W provides abt 370W.

Your right on the money, psu's are usually rated for 80% efficiency on particular temps, the good ones are usually on 50C realistic and the average ones on 25c or something. So with that its about 316w, which still exceeds the expected load. As I said it should be enough, but when u use the card with ur system, you will come to know first hand, dont panic to get a psu unless u start getting lockups crashes, and dont overclock ur card until u know for sure the system is stable with card on stock. If it is able to manage the card on stock decent overclocking shouldn't be a issue either.

@ X-Rebel
Yep! U are right. VX450 efficiency is around 85%, and 15% loss reflects ~68W loss on 450W. Hence, it actually provides 382W.
Still, it is well above total system power which can't exceed 300W even with most high end system. No need to worry.:)

Now I am confused. AFAIK. :ashamed: 85% efficiency will mean that it can provde max 450W of power to ur components. However, when it provides 450W, this will be 85% of what it consumes from the wall socket. So total consumption will be ~500-550 W.

Where are the PSU gurus.

I think my calculation is the valid one here :ashamed:

Yup right if components needs 200W @ LOAD, SMPS will consume 230W from mains (acc. to 85% effeciency).

I use Q6600 @ 3.2 24/7....plannin to get ASUS 4870...:cool2:....using Corsair VX450...ill run the card on stock....will my PSU take the OCed proccy n stock card... :ashamed:

Now, i'm confused. Is 15% efficiency there gain or loss on actual wattage??
Someone plz help me.. who is PSU guru here?
