Vista x64 SP1

4gbDDR2 ram

XFX 7600GT

AsusP5b mobo BIOS 1238

Past few days I am getting strange behavior while working or browsing or doing nothing Vista x64 freezes for 10-15 sec.

Mouse wont move nor respond

sound if playing shudders

movie pauses

applications freeze what ever they were doing

I cleaned my cabinet assuming the dust accumulated may be overheating the CPU, but even after that the problem remains as it is.

I restored the old nvidia driver assuming the new driver might be causing the problem.

I am getting notification

new device detected>installing drivers> drive installed>autoplay for my 3 hdds randomly every few mins

Updated the asus P5b latest BIOS 1238

Updated the intel storage manager

I have the OS installed on seagate hdd 1.5Tb & the serial was checked it was not listed under the problem hdd, but could it be the source of the problem?

Also I lost the ability to wake up my system from sleep, not sure if all these are related problem.

Need help in sorting out this problem.

Backup your data and do a fresh install of windows and see if the problem still persists. This will actually clarify if it's a hardware/windows issue.

If problem is still there , then i think the RAM is at fault. Remove 1 stick if you are on dual channel memory (2x2GB) and see if the problem is still there.

just planning to install windows 7,

hope that will confirm the problem.

Just noticed another problem trying to burn a dvd, for 3 mins nero wont start, it remains stuck at 1% then after 3 mins it actually burns the data.

Could it be something to do with notorious 1.5 seagate hdd.

I even checked for a loose cable to hdd & power supply, they all seem to be fine.

Ok 1 more problem I was facing which I did not reported in my 1st post (I will edit the 1st post too).

I was getting notifications

new device detected>installing drivers> drive installed>autoplay for my 3 hdds

Its back in new installation too in windows 7

I have checked for any loose cables, I cant find the source of the problem, it indeed is some hardware related issue, may be power supply is failing or the mobo itself might be the cause.

Need help now to get out of this problem.

I had a similar problem when I was on vista, now that I have shifted to Windows 7, the freezes are rare but they are still there. They happen atleast once in 10-15 hrs. Can it be caused because I run my system 24/7?

I think the culprit for freezing in OS is the RAM or HDD...:)

Check ur RAM by using 1 at a time for few hours in the frequency u expect the problem to come...Same with the HDD...

U'll come to know...:)

Well, i am not aware of desktop freezing happening ever due to a OS unless an application locks it or hardware issue....:bleh:

Forgot to mention the biggest culprit for freezes - an improper overclock...Summers approaching...watch out....

do you get random restarts?

No not at all

Good suggestion I will take out 3 gb & test 1 by 1

System is not overclocked at all I am using it default BIOS settings.

I still feel that this could be power supply (Zebronics platinum) problem, its 2years old, how can I check it?

Finally (I hope so) zeroed down the problem to one of the hdd, unplugged it & now the problem seems to be gone, either the hdd is getting ready to go kaput or the sata cable may be faulty, will sort out that too by interchanging the cable & see if that solves the problem.

Back again now

another hdd showing the same errors appearing & disappearing

The worse is that it detects & install & then again disappear from "My computer" & device manager

need to think elsewhere, any pointer to find solution?

Just to check if it happens on another OS I loaded windows 7, few hrs it was fine but next day it started also acting the same way.

This morning funny thing happened that I am not able to boot at all in Vista x64 or windows7 x64 both hang at windows starting screen then restart in a loop, I am out of main system, just using older hdd with xp as of now to boot using the same hardware.....................so I am more confused now.

Kaspersky can take care of virus quite well I ruled out that possibility 1st before even posting the issue here.

So now you are getting restarts eh?

are you connecting the hard disks to the same IDE / SATA channel?

Can also be mobo capacitor problem / psu / RAM / overheating processor. Perhaps the HSF needs a reseat with thermal paste.

I am only shooting in the dark.

I guess the best way to check a hardware fault would be to individually test everything on a second rig.

1 problem I have zeroed down is that sata port 1 is not working (not letting me boot up) rest 5 are working, so i have connected XP loaded hdd to the 2nd port.

If I connect XP loaded hdd to 1st port it does not boot up so mobo is surely acting funny.
