Microsoft responded Tuesday to reports that some Web sites have been circulating pirated copies of Vista and the Office 2007 applications suite.

But Microsoft said in a prepared statement that those pirated copies of the OS won't work for long.

"The copies available for download are not final code and users should avoid unauthorized copies which could be incomplete or tampered. This unauthorized download relies on the use of pre-RTM [release-to-manufacture] activation keys that will be blocked using Microsoft’s Software Protection Platform. Consequently, these downloads will be of limited value," the statement said.

ok vista looks interesting and im even planning to buy it when it comes out as it's better to have legit stuff in my field of work but i wanted to know a few things beforehand. if anyone who has used it/is using it could tell me the following things, i'd really appreciate it :

1. is there a HUGE difference from XP apart from the new look? what i mean is does the interface have any nifty additions to enhance a workflow rather than just being a new pretty skin? im talking about stuff similar to what can be found on Mac OS X like expose for quickly previewing open windows and switching to them.

2. is there a big performance hit and if there is, can stuff be turned off to get performance close to xp?

3. how about support and backward compatibility? when mac os jumped from 9 to X, many apps had to be rewritten and updated to get them to work. will i still be able to use all my programs if i move from xp to vista or will they require the developers to release a version specifically for vista? im guessing i will need new drivers for my hardware.

4. this is what im worried about the most. bugs. considering it's the first release, im guessing that there will be a lot of those. i wouldn't install vista if there are any known bugs which can crash the pc in the middle of a render.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out here. to anyone who thinks "why dont you just dual boot and find out?", remember i said i'm thinking of buying it so i wouldn't want to waste money without being sure :P

1. I hear some of the features are productivity enhancements based on OS X ;)

2. Not yet, but expect some utility to release that will enable this - System Mechanic perhaps

3. Good question, so far noone has complained about programs not working after they upgraded - but Quake 3 doesn't run, a big reason why I'm not installing Vista yet :D

4. Where there is software, there are bugs ;) You can't avoid them completely but chances are you won't run into any UNLESS the programs you're using have compatibility issues with Vista. Program updates/patches should be able to fix some of that, but I could be wrong.

Hope this helps man... my suggestion is wait a while before buying it.

1.> IMHO, there is a difference in the UI and it helps productivity. The explorer window and sidebar are quite useful. But UI is so much user-dependent, you may like it or not its an individual taste..

2.> performance is faster than XP acc to me if u've got 1GB RAM. Its better threaded for multicore CPUs, less memory leaks on windows components, etc...

3.> most apps are working for me...and I guess I use all types of apps. The drivers still need work, but then by 30th Jan... I think u'll get all the drivers u'll need.

4.> Very few in-the-face bugs left.

Things that are better than XP are huge. If u like Media center, Vista's Media center is a lot better than XP MCE05. Also security is lot better becoz of kernel-mode restrictions, windows defender, IE protected mode and many many other features... If u wanna get a new OS with atleast 1Gb RAM PC then u gotta be using Vista.

KK
For the record, KK had NOT posted any illegal stuff (such as links or torrents). Hope that clarifies

any info abt startforce games on vista ?? do they work ?

I was very happy that the starforce (a virus IMHO) wasnt working with Vista...but now its released a new driver that works with Vista:

About Microsoft Windows Vista compatibility

Atleast Splinter Cell worked for me...but I've heard that upcoming games from UbiSoft and most other studios wont have star-force. They wont be using it anymore...

So u think in the interview they r gonna ask u if u leaked Vista!!

& as all said...by ~7-10 months there will be a survey conducted by various websites to see how many people are using vista...
it'll be 65-35 . . (65 being others + xp)
after another few months..35-65 (35 being others + xp )

& the funny thing will be even 39% of those would not be having Unique key...:bleh:

but alas...im happy with xp & will stick with it for some more months...a year max...as i dont like betas...

^but ive read the l33t grp have not patched the os completely . . . .

some people would rather wait for the corp edition to release...

or is this RTM release already WPA hacked?

OK i heard this code

rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows

in cmd prompt will extend windows trial from 30 to another 30 days..

meaning..when u are 2-3 away from vista to expire .. execute this & the validity will be reset for another 30 days..

this can be done twice....

disclaimer..ive not tried this yet...smone plz try this 7 post here..:)
