Anyone have any idea when Vista OEM with SP1 slipstreamed is going to hit shelves here?

Might as well upgrade to Vista on the new rig I'm setting up just to see how it'll stack up :D . I'll still be using XP primarily.

Also, should I go for Home Premium, Business or Ultimate? I know there r threads discussing the diff on this forum and all over the www, but as I'm already starting a thread, all opinions welcome :) .

I'm also interested in acquiring the new Vista Ultimate SP1 retail release, so will watch this thread.

PS: Do you have 2x 74gb Raptors in RAID 0 stripe??? Would you happen to know whether a single Raptor as boot/app drive will improve OS/app/boot responsiveness subjectively noticeably?

Vista . They have listed Vista with Sp1 for sale so I'm confident that these would be out on stores as well.

naga you can use the compare site of microsoft to compare different editions of Vista. Compare Editions.

Go for the home premium or the ultimate edition.

Yes to your 1st question (although it's in the past tense... the board in my siggy is dead :( ). As to the second, I haven't done any comparisons with a single Raptor and or some other drive vis a vis my Raptor RAID 0. But yes, on many systems I have helped install, the ones using Raptors are very noticeably faster than ones using a normal Baracudda or such (haven't tried the seagate "raptors" :) ).

Mind you, these were all different setups but very near to the same level of performance parts. I have always noticed the HDDs to be the limiting factor even when I'm talking of at least 2 Ghz + CPUs with at least 1 GB of RAM. If you have the cash, go for the Raptors :hap2: !

According to the link given by octave (thanks :hap2: ), the business version seems to be the version of choice. Not interested in encryption and media Centre functionality seems unnecessary.

Is there anything else that ultimate offers over the business version aside of what's posted on the MS site? I'll be gaming, encoding and watching movies most of the time.

No expected date of availability of SP1 Vista in India?

How's the Windows complete PC backup and restore that's missing on Home Premium? Right now I use Acronis True Image to make a complete System backup after installing all the essential(for me) software. That way I don't need to re-format if anything goes wrong with my XP installation :)

I think you can use a video as a desktop background in the Ultimate Edition. So I guess Business version would be ideal based on your requirements.

The complete backup is nice, but Acronis will take care of that. What you might miss are the previous versions (is that on home premium? am not sure) feature.

I cannot confirm this completely, but i have felt the changes myself.
After installing SP1 via windows update 4 days ago, the "performance upgrades & reliability issue fixes", that were promised in the SP1 description have been delivered.
Since my config is not a very high-end one, 1gb ram-1.5ghz intel c2d-vista home premium, i couldn't run any games on it , & due to the lack of a graphics card to support them plus vista's complex "performance requirements" scoring system.
But after SP1, I've installed 4 games & they've all worked!
The games are SimCity Societies, NFS Most Wanted, AudioSurf & GTA San Andreas.
Even if this isn't the work of SP1 & my bubble soon bursts, i will still revel in the joys of Vista :ohyeah:

I forgot to mention 1 thing. I'm thinking of getting the x64 Vista. The rig's going to have 2 Gb RAM which I plan to upgrade to 4 later on. Any probs I might have with apps/ drivers (x64)?

There's also an Vista Enterprise edition for Vista which has SP1 integrated...I ve it installed on my system for 10 days.

But, U'd need to activate it directly through MS or *ahem*

It has the best of Home Premium & Business...only some features of Ultimate missing which I neva use...Google it n if U like, may be a PM might get U the *cough cough*

No problems with the x64 version of Vista. Most of the sites have started recommending x64 instead of x86 Vista.

@has33, I think I'll go for the genuine OEM Vista. Don't wanna cough cough version :ohyeah: as I think I'm really going to need the automatic updates (knowing Microsoft and their shitty unfinished software releases) . Thanks for the offer though :hap2:

I can slipstream SP1 myself, but why the trouble when I can buy one ready :D

The Vista Enterprise is totally Genuine...in fact that cough cough was cause non of the OEM quacks work on it...it has to be activated only through MS. Luckily, I ve a genuine serial :D

I post abt it cause it was the 1st SP1 integrated Vista, they released n its positioned abv Home Premium & Business...below Ultimate. So incase U don't want Ultimate...this was better than going Home Premium or Business.

^^My mistake, has33. Didn't bother to google Enterprise, hence the mistake!

Thanks again and apologies for thinking otherwise.

I've gone thru the Enterprise edition page on the MS site, and the extras they're giving are not going to benefit me much. Also, the software licensing issues make me think I'm better off with the OEM version :ohyeah: .

If I'm not mistaken, an MS employee can get you Ultimate for under Rs 4k from the US MS store :) Unfortunately for me I have friends in low places - not in MS specifically, just in general...

Sir, what is so special in Ultimate retail pack, I found u r very much interested. Today I stopped ordering Vista Premium preloaded system after seeing this. If u r able to source let me know please. waiting........

I have Home Premium on my tablet, and plan to continue with XP on my desktop, no Vista just yet... I was just mentioning that Ultimate version can be had for just rs 4k :) Also, I believe you cant (officially?) run virtualisation on versions other than Ultimate (and maybe Business/Enterprise)... it's really hard to check what details are not available in the non-Ultimate versions... blame MS for that
