I installed vmplayer on my windows system. i wanted to run slax in virtual mode. having created the vmx file from a livecd file i get a weird problem.

when i run the virtual os slax, after in starts booting, my mouse works properly when its in command mode. anything under mouse pointer is highlighted.

But when in gui mode the mouse behaves differently. if i want to click an object i get its hotspot about two lines above it :S

so to click something on the taskbar i have to take the mouse pointer around two lines above it and then it gets highlighted. i cant click the icons on edges of screen since obviously thier hotspot is not in range.

how do i get mouse to work properly? i mean click on things just below the pointer?

I couldn't get u ... what do u mean by "having created the vmx file from a livecd file" ?? :huh:

why don't u try with VMWare Server (Free) or VMWare Workstation (Trial) too :)

Have u installed the vmtools package inside the virtual OS? that improves performance.

^ how to install it in the virtual os? right now when i shut down the virtual os all settings are lost. i cant save settings to disk.

@kekerode, i have vmplayer installed. to run a live os cd (a live os iso) i need a vmx file to launch vmplayer. i got the settings for that file from a site, where i only had to change the iso name.

@OP, Install workstation. VMplayer is the not the real meat, it is a pink glass piece to see things pink. Workstation is what you should install.

- Install VM tools inside guest VM.

- Search for the vmware config file roaming over net for proper X configs.

Cu,

I have used SLAX on VMWare workstation sometime back and worked smoothly :)

What is so funny here?
A lot people write their vmx files.
You can customize/create your vmx for sure.

contents of vmx file:

config.version = "8"

virtualHW.version = "4"

scsi0.present = "FALSE"

memsize = "256"

ide1:0.present = "TRUE"

ide1:0.fileName = "slax.iso"

ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-image"

floppy0.present = "FALSE"

ethernet0.present = "TRUE"

usb.present = "TRUE"

sound.present = "TRUE"

sound.virtualDev = "es1371"

displayName = "LiveCD"

guestOS = "winxppro-64"

nvram = "nvram"

mks.enable3d = "FALSE"

vmmouse.present = "TRUE"

workingDir = "."

tools.syncTime = "TRUE"

tools.remindinstall = "FALSE"

extendedConfigFile = "livecd.vmxf" - vmplayer added this after running it the first time

virtualHW.productCompatibility = "hosted"

tools.upgrade.policy = "manual"

ethernet0.addressType = "generated"

uuid.location = "56 4d 1c 1a f7 27 47 a7-b1 07 b7 27 ae 1b 48 fa"

uuid.bios = "56 4d 1c 1a f7 27 47 a7-b1 07 b7 27 ae 1b 48 fa"

vmotion.checkpointFBSize = "16777216"

ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:1b:48:fa"

ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"

IIRC there is an "i8042.noloop" option to play around with mouse issues but that might be only for Virtual PC... BTW why not try latest free VirtualBox instead of vmware...?

Nothing funny dude :) ... even I write my own vmx files for different distros :hap2: ... I think that smiley is creating confusion :(

@6pack :

comment these entries by putting # in start of line

virtualHW.version = "4"

guestOS = "winxppro-64"

replace them with this

virtualHW.version = "7"

guestOS = "linux"

also try with
virtualHW.version = "6"
and
guestOS = "otherlinux"
combinations

Also update ur vmware player to latest if not done ... and ur mouse is PS/2 port connected or USB one :huh:

^Thanks, but unfortunately i uninstalled vmplayer. Just wanted to test it out and know what the hype was about running virtual machines.

my mouse is usb one. and vmplayer was latest downloaded just a few days back.
