Hey guys,

I wanna upgrade from the POS ALC850 onboard audio featured on the DFI mobo. So I wanna hear all the offers from you guys before I head out to the retail market. I am looking for cheap price points, and warranty is not absolutely essential.

The cards: Creative SB Live! 24 bit

Audigy 2 ZS

Regards,

Karan Misra

That newegg link looks like the SB Live value card - it's available in India for about the same price or lower.

is there any way to know exactly which version it is? whats the differentiating factor? also, whats the difference between a sb live! 16 bit 5.1 ch card and a 24 bit 7.1 ch card besides the obv....

Seeing you are into gaming, i'd recommend getting an audigy 2 instead. The live 24 bit lacks a DSP and consumes cpu power to emulate EAX.

I'm assuming it's the value edition simply based on the size and number of outputs plus lack of MIDI port... to answer your second question, first keep in mind CD quality is 16-bit so even recorded sound in 24-bit dithers down to 16-bit after mastering. This discussion can go on, but in short, your recording/mixing technique is more important than whether your soundcard is 16 or 24-bit. I did a lot of recording on my old computer that ran with the SBLive 5.1 - instruments were guitar, bass and keyboard - guitar and keyboard were recorded using MIDI input while the bass was through a cheap mixer. Sounded great. When I did some recording after getting the ZS, I think I convinced myself it was better because I paid so much for it LOL. Anyway, when I listen to both CD's now, I can only tell the difference because I know what I recorded on each card - anyone else couldn't tell :)

And no, this is not a pitch to sell my old SB Live - I know someday I'll just give it away for free :D

RIO - that is because youve never heard good soundcards in action. try recording with a pro soundcard in 24 bit / 44.1 khz unresampled audio through a good processor and you will realise how clean and natural it sounds. Regarding the creative soundcards, all creative cards ranging from the Sblive -> x-fi sound almost the same, with a tiny improvement. From what i have noticed is that the sound signature remains same in all creative cards, only that the newer models are free of noise and hissing due to smarter card design.

Anyways back to the topic - karan go for audigy 2 instead.

Uhmmm dude, please don't compare SB Live or Audigy to > $300 soundcards. And don't assume that I haven't seen pro cards in action - have you even held a Delta 1010 in the palm of your hand? ;) If you're in Chennai, you can check them at Promusic, Egmore.

Was that a touch of condescension ? i have used pro level sound cards for quite a while now, and own one right now.

How much for that card here in India appo ??
and will it sound better than my creative live! platinum for general purpose , digitally manipulated sounds (For e.g. MP3 , WMA, avi etc....)

dunno cost..will enquire....abt which card is better, amol would answer it better :p

@ deejay. It's the same card with the Audigy 2 LS core, stripped with hardware mixing.

Apparently creative thought that using the audigy brand name would be more profitable than using the SBlive one.

Stick to your Sblive Platium for a while, else go for a X-fi, if you want excellent gaming capability.

The live 24 bit sounds clean, means it has no hissing but it lacks the depth/soundstage and dynamics, due to the resampling issue.

Your live platium should provide EAX 2.0 hw support.

Thanks Amol.
Thats what i had figured but just wanted to make sure ...
I like that liveDriveII console which came with the card.
in case i get a new card in future i would continue to use the LiveDrive II , even if i have to solder wires on the new card for the audio sources / signals. The headphone output from it perfectly matches my Sony mdr CD550 digital reference head phones (of nearly 18 years Vintage ...;) )

I guess this thread is getting pretty much offtopic lol, but anyways quite a few vintage sony MDR headphones are still going strong even though they are a couple of decades old.

The Audigy SE is the same thing as live 24 bit. Its just a name change... do difference in hardware. Amol the live 24bit, audigy2zs and audigy sound extremely similar. The live 16bit had AC97 DACs :P. No chance it could even be close to any of the others :). Having used all of them, the X-Fi is way way better... but still doesn't hold a candle to the pro level cards for recording.

i have an audigy 2zs as well ..... its really kicks the sound blaster 5.1 live's ass not only in sound quality but also in sound processing applications like fruity loops....:)
