When I spoke about SBI, I said so as I have account in HDFC and ICICI, the amount of money they charge is abnormal, if somebody deposits cash in other city to your account then they will charge more than SBI and so on..
SBI has all the details online too, you can do whatever you can with other banks online acility.

Can you tell me one online website which accepts SBI Maestro Debit Card except irctc.co.in? It's Maestro not Master Card.

+1 for SBI. Becoz it safest and you'll find it everywhere in India and even outside India in some countries too. ATM's are easily available everywhere. As far I've seen I've founded 2/3 SBI ATM for each other bank's ATM's while travelling or roaming around here and there.

There are quite a number of sites which accept only VISA cards. Only the large and popular ones give a choice for using other cards. In fact I have seen quite a number of ATM's which do not work with anything anything other than VISA.

HDFC is the best for tech savvy guys! Mainly bcoz of its VCC.

Only problem is they ask u to maintain Rs.10k/5k minimum :(

Just see if you can get the no frills account...

I got an HDFC corporate accnt ... Netbanking works like a charm.

You should have an SBI account because its nationally accepted and across all businesses and institution .. Its good for students in terms of fee etc.

Get an SBI account first then get a private bank .. Id suggest HDFC.

Citibank Online banking is good too. HDFC is good, but the only issue is: it takes almost a day to add a TPT payee. Citibank is instant.

I dont know about other banks but being a tech savvy student you might feel the need of a credit card without maintaining one. So for that the HDFC bank account with netsafe virtual credit cards is the best option. Also I have had mostly bad experiences with ICICI.

In fact back in 2007 I did a survey on TE regarding online banking services, HDFC came out on top.

Go for SBI only if you want the safest and cheapest bank account to maintain. If you want good online/phone/ATM banking or fast responsiveness go for a private bank.

SBI can be pretty lazy and clueless when it comes to providing prompt service when you have to deal with them from anywhere other than being physically present at the bank counter. Their Credit Card services and associated Customer Care operate the same way.

I once ordered RAM directly from Memory configurator UK using an SBI Credit Card. Their policy includes verifying the credit card details from the issuing Bank and they faxed SBI for the same and kept waiting for a confirmation which they never got. When I learned about the issue, I called up SBI, but they were totally clueless and they did not even understand the issue. Finally MemC used contacts at their own bank in UK to get the credit card details verified and shipped out the order. We have had similar issues with bank accounts that my Mom has.

So if you want prompt responsiveness from a bank for any reason, then SBI is not for you.

SBI bank and SBI card are two different entities. SBI credit card is managed GE Capital services and is a private organisation. It has no link with SBI bank - just the name is common.

I have a SBI account for last 6 years. Pretty satisfied with it. Although it lacks some features (like cheque collection from ATM drop boxes) but otherwise it is very good specially for a student/salaried person.

ICICI student account has some disadvantages I believe i.e. you can't issue a cheque unless it is co-signed by an adult. Not sure if student account is for 18+ individuals.

ICICI has problems i> like too many customers so individual service is not prompt even if you visit a branch. It's very bad on saturdays and sundays ii> heavy charges on drafts, iii> staff keep changing so they are quite untrained. iv> Minimum balance of Rs 10,000/-

But they seem to have improved in recent times. Some advantages are a mostly well functioning website and branch timings are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

HDFC has problems like i> you have to submit seperate form at the branch to enable funds transfer to another bank account (except for HDFC), break FD etc. ii> one day waiting period to enable transfer to another external account. iii> Rs 5/- per online transaction. On the other hand, things get solved with a visit to the branch. But branch timings are average i.e. 9:30 to 12:30 a.m. and 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Minimum balance is 5000/- I think for a regular account.

State Bank of India has problems like i> customer service is only good mostly at personal banking branches. ii> computers don't work when you visit some branches. iii> branch does not operate for a long duration(which can be a major pain given that you have to keep visiting the branch for a solution to your problem).

Their website has had some improvements but still, more can be done. Staff is better trained but can also have attitude on account of their long term in the bank.

thanks a ton to all of you guys

looks like SBI and HDFC to me

thanks again

right now i am 50-50 about SBI and HDFC

but if HDFC bank requires a minimum balance of 10k then its surely SBI :)

^Go for HDFC no-frills account and you won't regret it. I'm using the same and it has all features. You have to submit a letter/application (one time) for the Third Party Transfer and then it's all over. You can start your online shopping!:)

SBI rocks. I have an a/c in sbi. Its better for student and also for its low min balance only .5k

Yes, but the service is equally bad in both. I am not saying that the bank itself is bad. Over the counter service is great, but online and phone services are pretty weak compared to private banks. I still trust SBI over any other and have most of my savings/ FD's there, but for every day use and responsiveness I prefer to use my HSBC account.

I think you can for SBI + ICICI b2 if you are not comfortable with the high minimum balance of a normal ICICI account. :)

It will be a good combination, b2 provides a virtual credit card, free DD, free NEFT, etc But only problem is that its 100% online, even if you want to withdraw or deposit money you can do it only by online transfer.

You have no idea how much I've been ripped off by these private banks! In excess of 30k. I am NEVER opening an account with em'!
