Want to buy a Lappy

Need advice to buy a lappy.
Basically need to upgrade from an old P3 and need the lappy to save space at home rather than for carrying around so 3 KG is not really a big deal. Battery backup time also is not very important.
Important that it should be good enough to run several application concurrently specially since I am security obsessed and run multiple anti-spyware, anti-virus and a desktop firewall.
It is not going to be used for gaming but mainly browsing, some photoshop, etc.
It should not be Celeron based. Either Pentium M or something with a better VFM.
256 MB RAM is OK to start with as I'll upgrade later. Also I would need 40GB (preferably 60 GB HDD)
A DVD writer would be desireble but if that pushes up the price too much, I might settle for a CD writer and go for external DVD writer later.
Price is very important and ideally I would like to have something under 40K
Suggestions, advice, user experience would be welcome.

Yup right section... :) Just give some time to Techies to set the ball rolling....

You should check out some AMD Turon based notebooks brought out by HP. I dont remember the model number but one has 512MB RAM, ATI Graphics 128 MB, DVD combo or writer i dont know, MMC slots, 4 + hr Battery backup for 53 K . Great buy i would say.

Also check out Thinkpad series. They have amazing build quility, second to probably ToughBooks.

:)

Thanks for the info. 53 K is beyond budget right now. In fact Acer has a Turion based lappy @ about 48K with two optical drives.

By the way what your experience with your lappy? What is its price? I am told that the widescreen display has a problem rendering certain webpages. Is that true?

^^ No not true but yes you cant play most games in widescreen, dont know why but my driver just hangs. 53K is what is quoted you could get about 2 to 3 K down with the dealer if u negotiate.

I am having amazing experience with my lappy. Just go for it dont think. Lappys heat up a little so if you keep it on a flat surface then its fine otherwise it does heat up if the fan gets blocked.

I have some laptops for sale if you want. and a one similar to mine but with integrated bluetooth and Pentium M 1.6. Check in the market.

I am looking for a new piece not used.

Why is everyone else silent?
Look at my requirement again. Would a Celeron with large (2GB) RAM better serve my needs than a Pentium M with 256 MB?
What about a Sempron?
How does the Turion compare against the Pentium M in terms of processing power and power consumption?

Yes that might be most likely true for many site. But the problem is that of inefficient coding and nothing else. Dont blame the widescreens for this. :P

And if your requirement is limited to that of photoshop at max then the celeron would work well for you.
However I say that you stop being paranoid and stop using so many security apps coz they put a lot of load on the processor. And even if you do then keep only one each of antivirus/firewall/antispy on active mode. Believe me you dont need 3 antivirus programs scanning the same website berfore it loads. Only logical reason for this could be that you surf too many underground sites. :P
Howver you must have a GB of RAM coz if you have only 512 then some of it would be shared with onboard and then you would launch many security apps. And then if you would want to launch PS while browsing the net. It would get damn slower.
Also when you are low on memory then the apps take eternity to load when you start the comp.

Actually I normally run just one AV and Firewall. But at this moment I am using two because of a problem I had with my ISP and their guy was blaming the situation on a virus in my system. I added another AV to prove that my system was virus free. However, I do have multiple anti-spyware. I know I will have to get these down to one.

The main reason for doing this is because using multiple products improves the ability to catch a new pest as different products will update their database at different times.

emil tghe ispthings we r fool...as i was using alotof p2p and using the bandwidth....my isp used to dc me and say........i hav virus on my system..........

my best bet is use deafult firewall of xp...and avg, avast or nod32 is more than enough all less system hungry

Guys, Dell has announced the Inspiron 6400 based on the Core Duo and the base price is 51.75 K plus VAT. Seemes to be a great price for this config. Only problem is I have heard a lot of horror stories about DELL's repair setup both with regard to timeliness and cost.

Any inputs?

I don't use Win XP because I have a slow machine. I use Win 2K. I use the FireBall firewall and Avast AV. Both are excellent.

IN the news article that dipdude posted, it was mentioned that all that the windows firewall does is that it blocks any unauthorised inbound connection attempt. But it never blocks any outbound connection that a process from your PC attempts.
