Hi,
I'm looking to buy a new RAM for my PC. The details are

Motherboard - Gigabyte H55M-S2

Processor - Intel core i3-540 ( I think its first generation )

GPU - Sapphire HD 7750

PSU - Corsair 430 V2

I've been upto a bit of research on RAM's and I apparently understand that 1600 RAM is supported from Intel 3rd generation processors onwards. However the product page of my Motherboard shows listed support for RAMs with 1600 & Intel Core i3 processors ( generation not stated though). The intel page states support upto 1333 mhz. Please help me with this dilemma. I'm not looking to OC the computer.

Also, should I buy one stick of 8 GB or 2 * 4 GB? Looking to buy either a Corsair or G.Skill Ram within a budget of 3000, however open to other manufacturers too. Primary usage - some casual gaming, HD movies / Videos.

Here are the links to the page of my processor & motherboard

ARK | Intel® Core? i3-540 Processor (4M Cache, 3.06 GHz)

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1156 - GA-H55M-S2 (rev. 1.3)

Your motherboard/cpu will not support 8gb module, i have tried it , so you can only go for 4gb x sticks , for running the ram at 1600 mhz you will have to overclock your cpu , there is no other way

1333/1600 Mhz is the speed at which your RAM cycles or communicates with your chipset and Processor

You have a Core i3-540 which supports speeds upto 1333/1066 Mhz
While your Motherboard supports 1666/1333/1066 Mhz Rams, which means even if you buy a 1600 Mhz RAM it will downclock to 1333 Mhz and operate at that speed
There will be no compatibility problems
Also as your motherboard supports Dual-channel architecture get a 4GBX2 RAM rather
than a single 8GB stick
Here are some of the options
Corsair XMS3 DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) PC RAM (CMX8GX3M1A1600C11): Flipkart.com ~ 2836
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) PC RAM (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9R): Flipkart.com ~ 3290
G.Skill Sniper DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) PC RAM (F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR): Flipkart.com ~ 3103
G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) PC RAM (F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL): Flipkart.com ~ 3591

You can go for either Corsair or G.Skill, both are great brands, personally I prefer G.Skill

Flipkart RAM prices are on the higher side. I purchased the Gskill ripjawsx set for Rs.2700/- from Primeabgb at their store at Lamington Rd, Mumbai. Primeabgb online price is Rs.2750/- Even if u add shipping cost, it will not be more han 3K.

Arjun - point noted, will get 2 * 4 GB.

Just out of my curiosity, why doesn't my motherboard support 8 GB? Where did you establish that from?
allrounder799 - Thanks for the advice. I might go for Corsair after hearing of their great Post Sales Support and my entire experience of 430V2
raj404 - I shall do a bit of bargain hunting before purchasing the RAM modules. Thanks :)

Its the cpu not the motherboard, memory controller is on the cpu , i had a i3 540 & h55 board, i tried corsair 8gb x2 vengeance , it does not work .
