I'm looking for lots of space - 1.5TB would be a good place to start. I cannot spend a lot, not as much as the 3.5" external solutions cost. Assume budget to be 7K max. Wouldn't mind trying out an internal HDD + casing, but don't know much about reliability. Could spend up to 8 if I were to get 2 TB.

It will be used as a backup drive. Connected once a month and mostly stored for the remainder of the time.

Suggestions with prices, advice most welcome.

Western Digital Green 1.5TB would be the best for backup storage. It costs around 5.6k I think.

You could use a good Transcend casing which comes for around 2k.

^ Second that. 1.5 TB / 2TB internal drive.(whichever is more VFM) with a good casing or dock should be nice. Either a external case or a Vantec dock. Dock would be better if you plan to get more back up drives in future. Whatever you get , get something with Esata .Moving TB's of data via USB will be a pain :P.

Also I tried out this casing from Sunbeamtech .Its very well built ,has fan to cool keep the drive temps. low and has e-sata as well. Would recommend it if you are looking for a case.

Airbox 3.5" External Enclosure

+1 for this.

+1 for the dock. Simple and elegant to use.
I take weekly backups on a 500 gigger with it. eSata and plug-in dock makes it a breeze

Been waiting for good DEAL of a Dock since like forever... :|

Cmon guys lets arrange for a GB ?

@mediahome : Weren't you planning for some GO for a dock, a while back ?

How the hell do you use 6x HDDs, you mean you plug in, back up and remove then plug in the next HDD? Isn't that a pain? Does the dock support 2 TB drives?

Thanks guys, keep the suggestions coming.

I'm not too sure about the capacity thingy, maybe you should take a look at the vantec webpage.
Switching HDDs is a breeze.
Hit the blue power button, hit white release button, pop in next hdd, hit blue power button :D

And is the mechanism reliable? I mean, is the device long lasting? I'm sure Prime ABGB or someone in Mumbai should have stock of this, or is newegg my only option?

mediahome's transcend storejet 35 ultra is ROCKSOLID device/casing....though swapping hdd r a bit pain with 12 screws ,but on reliability front ,i think it beats everything else...running my pc 24x7(NON-Stop) for above 6 months through it,without any issues!

using the mechanism since Nov 2008 & it's still ok *touch wood*
HDS ES EU BK HDD Docking Station European don't know how reliable Sunbeam is

Not to mention slightly biased views? Mediahome plugging the casing he sells? I would have given it more thought if it was anyone else..

am not selling the casing on te or the website :P . am mediahome much later. in btw i was gettin the xigmatek docks if u happen to know :P , and even have those oem docks with me . but for just taking data once in a while is ok. but for regular back up to save the HDD from all the jerks dust and handling since its a back up i prefer the casing and nothing else :P .

i am using the sunbeam dock for backups in office. its the best option. the website says that it supports upto 1tb. but i am using a 1.5tb wd green hdd & it works perfectly.

I use my Coolermaster XCraft esata casing with the 1.5TB WD Green for weekly backups. I Think cases with fans are overrated when youre gonna use the drive for about 1 hour a day max!
