You really think CS is anywhere on the same level as the Warcraft universe when it comes to game franchise legacies?hitman02in said:and about legacy -
if warcraft has legacy - so does counter strike.
if starcraft has legacy so does half life.
and yeah steam is so much better than battle.net that i dont even need to elaborate on it - and its no longer just a platform for valve's games - but is a great platform for many indie developers as well.
they have done a good deal for the gaming community.
they are certainly not below any league.
Steam and B.net are two different infrastructures. I agree Steam has done more for gaming in general but B.net wasn't ever meant to be more than a matchmaking service and that also just for Blizzard games. They have started selling games now, but it's still just Blizzard games only.
Now, let's go back 15 years when services like Heat, TEN and Kali were trying to charge people for playing multiplayer games online.
Along comes B.net and changes the entire game with 100% free online gaming and matchmaking.
This at a time when you needed such 3rd party services to find games for you because games majorly used the IPX protocol and you needed IPX emulators like Kali and others to connect with other players even if you knew their IP address.
So, if not for B.net, who knows multiplayer gaming on PCs might have been a paid affair controlled by a few companies like that on consoles .
Yea, everyone is aware of the deal with GW. Blizzard only wanted the lore and franchise. The gameplay mechanics are entirely original.jc36lect3r said:^^ Don't bet on it. The Warhammer universe existed as a pen and paper RPG long before Blizzard was even formed. Apparently Blizzard was supposed to make a Warhammer game but the deal fell through. Blizzard then released Warcraft and Starcraft with enough differences to avoid a lawsuit, but unmistakable similarities. As much I admire Blizzard, it is difficult to overlook the similarities between Blood Ravens and Space Marines, Elders and NightElves, Tyranids and Zerg.
It's more of a licensing deal than anything. GW wasn't even in the PC gaming business back then.
