No Sequel Planned for Space Marine Despite Decent Sales

Danny Bilson, THQ’s Executive Vice President of Core Games recently spoke out on the future of the Warhammer 40K franchise, explaining that a sequel to the moderately well received Space Marine is not currently in the cards.

He also went on to add that the game sold relatively well for them. So why are they not continuing to build upon the franchise you might ask? Well, it looks like the publisher has their hands full with another title set in the Warhammer 40K universe, one that is so large that there simply won’t be enough room for a Space Marine 2.

In an interview with Joystiq, Bilson explained that Dark Millennium, their upcoming MMO set in the Warhammer 40k universe, will likely fill any void fans of the franchise might have come 2013.

"We’ve already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play, and if you combine that it’s very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I’m not sure there’s room for Space Marine.

We are heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there’s more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while."

Just when I thought it got better, they shatter the hopes of a sequel. :(

^^ Damn, damn, damn... I loved playing through this game and really was hoping to see a sequel. Maybe once they are done with Dark Millennium they might think about doing a sequel for Space Marines? Dim chance really judging by the above news. :(

Well at least they (THQ) didn't pull the plug on this franchise, like they did with Red Faction series, which was a dick move to be honest. If they are going back to their previous gameplay approach, then I'm out.

Pull the plug on the W40k franchise? You'd have to be crazy to do that. W40k has a very dedicated, albeit niche, following. Also, Space Marine was probably the weakest game to have come out from THQ under the W40k banner.

They are probably going to concentrate on the MMO and the DLCs for Retribution that they've been talking about.

Well, finished this yesterday. Overall, an awesome game with some irritating bits. Game starts off very well, but gets boring soon. But, the game gets really picks up around level 9-10. After that it is pure joy until the final boss battle. The combination of a jet pack and a thunder hammer has to been seen to be believed. Also, the part where the Blood Ravens show up and the fight over bridge is just epic. BUT, the most disappointing thing has to be the final boss battle. It is a ****ing QTE!! I mean, they made the whole game without having to resort to any stupid QTEs and then they decided to make the final boss encounter a QTE! I mean, who the **** thought this was a good idea?

Also, some checkpoints are really badly placed. Near to the final boss battle, there is a cutscene and a checkpoint just before that. Right after the cutscene is a huge battle where you face multiple waves of enemies. So, if you die in that battle, it means you have go through that cutscene again and again. This is annoying. I had this same issue in Deus Ex: HR also in the first boss encounter. I mean it should common sense by now not to place checkpoints before cutscenes.

Anyway, the game overall is pretty good. Worth playing once.
