Watching TV in widescreen

One of the most frustrating things about watching TV on a bigscreen LCD is the aspect ratio issue. With most broadcasts only available in 4:3, the option is to watch it with two black bars on the side or to watch in 16:9 mode and see everyone stretched out. I wonder when our channels realize that the numbers of people with widescreen HDTV has reached a critical mass and start broadcasting in widescreen?

Yes! But, some of the newer panels have viewing modes to reduce the stretching effect.

I think Panasonic has the best stretch mode out there.

In "Just" mode it leaves the center(usually the subject/target of the camera) alone and streches only the outside edges.

You can still notice it but it is less annoying than most others I've seen

@jaganm I dont think the number of people with widescreen TV's is more than 10% of the total viewers in India.

As far as satellite television is considered, I think bandwidth constraints are making it impossible for the DTH providers to provide both 4:3 and 16:9 feeds. They dont want to antagonise the majority of the viewership. That is why they are still sticking with 4:3 broadcasts.
