Carrying on the rich hacker tradition of picking up the slack for companies that are unwilling or unable to provide the functionality users need, a team of Wii coders have given the console what Nintendo could not: DVD playback. By installing a small, hidden channel on a system, this package blesses the console with a libdi file (DVD access library), and allows you to watch your favorite videos with the MPlayer application, an open source media player. The install file will run on modded and unmodded systems, and the software is also capable of playing media from SD cards (though it's experimental right now). Finally Wii owners can join the ranks of, well... pretty much everyone else.

The Wii finally gets DVD playback -- no thanks to Nintendo - Engadget

what the heck i thought the wii was designed to play dvd's as well. any way good luck to all the wii owners who can enjoy dvds on their machine.i dont think its gonna upscale dvds as the will itself doesnt support hig-def.

Wah finally... its such a annoyance not being able to play DVDs on your wii, or divx, hope this thing does play Divx as well, although i can stream the videos but having to play dvds directly is a boon

guys u will get a gr8 dvd player for around 2500rs why go for the wii, which is inferior at playing dvds

its not about being inferior or superior, its just a homebrew novelty. Moreoever, from what I have read around, people discourage from playing dvd's on wii lest it screw up the optical drive.

Yeah true. If you play DVD's on the WII. It will screw up the optical drive. And will have to junk the Wii as it is very expensive to replace the same.
