I got a WD 160 GB. It used to work properly. But then I didn't use it for quite some time. Now when I hook it up to my CM690 top USB connector it just doesn't get detected. The HDD works (I can use it on my lappy) and the USB port is fine too (My Sandisk cruzer pen drive gets detected) Any idea what maybe wrong here ?

The thing is that I want the hdd to get detected on the top port. If it gets detected on the rear ports that doesnt help me coz I cant keep the hdd there, and the wire is too short.

is this the 160gb WD passport? coz a friend is having the same issue. he had a 120gb with the same problem with some PCs. RMAed it, got 160gb in return, had the same problem.

AFAIK Vince its not a problem with any of the hardware. I had windows xp on my machine before Vista x64. It used to work flawlessly. Dunno what changed because of the OS  . It gets detected on my other machines.

Guess it detected the HD as a new device(perhaps coz ur using it after quite some time) but couldn't finish installing the drivers successfully...

Just restart and try connecting again..

As such, when Windows detects a new device and searches for drivers, mostly built-in and then installs it.So it registers the device and every time you connect it,it gets detected without any problems..

^^before, the hdd would reinstall the drivers every time the hdd was connected. now even thats not happening.

Didn't try this after installing Vista anytime. And never did any drivers get installed :ashamed: Actually it doesn't show up in my Device manager or Disk Management. It just doesn't do anything. Just the led near the connector goes on flickering... :(

This is true :|

^Hey, am facing the same problem with Superczar's WD Passport, it doesn't get detected in the front port of the CM 690. I think its basically because the front ports are not able to support enough power to the drive whereas for the pen drives n all it shouldn't be a issue.

It doesn't work on my Antec Super Lanboy's front port either.

What you can do is get a longer usb cable to mini usb cable and use it.

P.S. Actually its the same case with all the 2.5 hdd w/ casing i have used so far.

WTF man so my worst nightmares are confirmed that I will have to buy a USB extender; or the mini usb cable :(

I think that's the issue !
But my Bijli cabby's 4 front usb ports have no prob whatsoever...

Such issues(w.r.t ext. hdd) are common when using an USB EXTENSION CABLE ! not otherwise..

Check the cables of the front usb port on the cm690...

same issue for me me having WD 120 (Silver color one) doesnt work on front usb :( but gets detected and works good on Dell's usb port so i usually keep it on desk only :(

shld i also get it RMA ??

No detection of at all of HDD by a particular USB port is generally due to conflicts of hardware resources like IRQs, I/O ports of various hardwares installed. If OS is changed, resources allocation to hardwares is also changed. This is related to change in OS and I am sure that change of another OS would solve this problem. In case of inadequate power supply to USB port, it detects hardware but (i) it may not install its driver properly (ii) Even if installed, transfer speed may be bit slow.

@stud23: my friend reinstalled XP with latest SPs.. still no effect.

@Saiyan: will ask my friend to use a different usb cable

@Vince: On this same machine with Windows XP SP2 32bit the front usb were working fine. Dunno what happened when I installed Vista x64 :(

Re-installation may not work in this case. As I said earlier, change in OS may eliminate this problem as it would re-allocate hardware resources.
